Kansas City, Mo. – The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) will offer a workshop and a guided hunt to introduce people to squirrel hunting. Squirrels are plentiful, fun to hunt and can make great table fare. They offer a good introduction to sport hunting.
This workshop is being led by the staff at MDC's Burr Oak Woods Nature Center. Registration is required. The workshop is free and open to ages 11 and older. Youths age 11 to 15 must be accompanied by an adult.
An orientation will be held Saturday, Jan. 10, 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., at Burr Oak Woods Nature Center in Blue Springs, 1401 N.W. Park Road. The orientation will include firearm safety, squirrel hunting basics and scouting. Shooting skills will also be covered with some target shooting.
Participants will go on a squirrel hunt on Saturday, Jan. 24, from 9 a.m. to Noon, at the Cooley Lake Conservation Area in Clay County near Missouri 210 east of Liberty. A mentor and equipment will be provided for participants.
Hunters ages 16 and up need to be either Hunter Education certified or will need to purchase an Apprentice Hunter Authorization and a small game hunting permit. An optional part of the workshop will be a session on cleaning and cooking squirrels from 1 to 3 p.m. on Jan. 24 at Burr Oak Woods. Squirrels make delicious table fare.
