MDC to host beginning deer hunter clinic and guided hunt for women

High Ridge, Mo. — The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) will host a Discover Nature – Women’s Deer Hunting Clinic that will offer the chance for women who are first-time hunters or have not yet harvested a deer to participate in a fully guided deer hunt. The clinic and hunt are free and will take place in multiple sessions during September, October, and November.

The initial informational and overview meeting will be held at Jay Henges Shooting Range on Monday, Sept. 30, from 6 to 8 p.m. The meeting will cover classroom basics of deer hunting and firearms. There is unlimited seating for the informational/overview meeting.

Participants must attend mandatory follow-up classes during October and November in order to participate in the hunt. Dates and times will be announced during the Sept. 30 meeting. They are also required to schedule practice shooting sessions on their own at Jay Henges Range during the same time frame. Normal booth fees will be waived for those registered in the clinic.

The actual hunt is limited to 10 women and will take place at Shaw Nature Reserve in Gray Summit from Friday evening to Saturday night, Nov. 22 and 23. Participants will stay in cabins Friday night at the Dana Brown Overnight Center on Shaw Nature Reserve. Appetizers and hors d’oeuvres will be served Friday evening, while breakfast, lunch, and dinner will be served on Saturday. Participants may bring any additional snacks or drinks they choose for the weekend.

The hunt will be fully guided by trained professionals to ensure a safe and educational experience. Firearms will be provided for those who do not already have their own.

MDC reminds participants that moderate to high physical exertion is required for the hunt as hunters will be hiking over varying terrain while carrying their firearms, and they are required to field dress their harvest.

There is no charge for the clinic. Up to two reservations are allowed per registration; groups should contact the range for more information. Spaces are limited and registrations are taken on a first come first serve basis once registration opens.

The Jay Henges Shooting Range and Outdoor Education Center, operated by the MDC, is located off I-44 at the Antire Road exit in High Ridge.
