CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) announces a campfire cooking program, Saturday, July 25, from 10 to 11:30 a.m. at the Cape Girardeau Conservation Nature Center.
"We strive to help people discover nature through all kinds of outdoor skills and activities," said Jamie Koehler, assistant manager of the center. "Cooking at the campfire is a necessary skill for anyone who wants to enjoy camping, not to mention everything cooked over a campfire just tastes better."
The group will learn include techniques such as grilling, foil cooking, pie irons and cooking on a stick. They'll also spend time learning to build a fire safely and about food safety.
"Time around the campfire is always a special time for families," Koehler said. "Our hope is that this program will build on that time and maybe even get a few families to gather around a campfire for the first time. Who knows, new family traditions in nature could start here."
The group will meet at the Nature Center's fire pit to discuss and try various ways of campfire cooking. The program includes an opportunity to try samples at the end.
