Cape Girardeau, Mo -- Although many southeast Missourians enjoy the Mississippi River from the shore on a daily basis, the Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) wants to ensure Missourians have a chance to experience the river by boat as well. To meet this need, the Cape Girardeau Conservation Nature Center will host "Floatin' on the River" Aug. 15-16.
"Experiencing the mighty Mississippi by boat is one of the most exciting ways to discover nature in our area," said Michelle Randecker, a naturalist at the nature center. "This program will offer people a chance to experience the river in a way they might not be able to on their own."
The program begins with a safety presentation on Aug. 15 at the nature center. On Aug. 16, participants will be led by naturalists and biologists on a 13-mile float from Trail of Tears State Park to Red Star Access.
Randecker said some paddling experience is required and participants must be at least 16 years of age to participate. She said MDC will provide canoes or participants may bring their own canoe or kayak.
