MACON, Mo. – The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) invites youth to discover nature with a youth rabbit hunt from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 10, at Thomas Hill Reservoir Conservation Area (CA). This program is open to youth ages 10 to 15 and their parent or adult mentor. All participants must register by Jan. 8.

The morning will combine classroom and hands-on training. Topics will include rabbit habitat, hunting with beagles, equipment, hunting safety, and shotgun shooting techniques. Then, all participants will be paired with an experienced guide and go hunting.

"This youth hunt is a great opportunity for those kids who have wanted to try rabbit hunting but didn't have a good spot to go, or maybe didn't have anyone experienced to take them," said MDC Outdoor Skills Specialist Rob Garver.

The youth rabbit hunt is co-sponsored by the Mid-Missouri Young Guns Quail Forever chapter. Breakfast and lunch will be provided for all participants.

To register for the event, call Keith Carter at 660-651-3811 or by visiting the Mid-Missouri Young Guns facebook page. For more information about the event, call Garver at 660-785-2420 or send an e-mail to Rob.Garver@mdc.mo.gov.

Thomas Hill Reservoir CA is located west of Macon. For directions, take Hwy 36 west to Route C. Head south 10 miles to College Mound, then Route T west 2.4 miles to the main entrance.
