Horseshoe Bend

Natural Features:

This hairpin turn in the Big Piney River has carved down through the Roubidoux formation sandstone on the ridges down into the Gasconade formation dolomite below. The Big Piney River supports a good fishery of smallmouth bass and other game fish.

Quercus Flatwoods

  • Old-growth post oaks.
  • See a once extensive community type on the broad flat ridges of the Ozarks.

Natural Features Description:

Slow-growing post, blackjack and white oaks grow here. Some post oaks exceed 200 years in age. These stunted trees grow this way because of the soils here. The silty soils have a fragipan, a root restricting layer at three feet below the surface. Under the fragipan is a red cherty clay material.

Piney River Narrows

  • Explore and fish along West Piney Creek.

Natural Features Description:

This area features the confluence of West Piney Creek and the Big Piney River. Both streams support good fish populations of both game and other native fishes. Along the Big Piney and the lower reaches of West Piney Creek are found popular game fish species such as smallmouth bass, longear sunfish, and rock bass.
