Kansas City, Mo. – The Missouri Department of Conservation's Anita B. Gorman Discovery Center will host a “Sustainability Saturday” event on Saturday, Aug. 3, that is devoted to education, actions and products that promote recycling and wise use of natural resources. Experts from non-profit groups, public agencies and private business will make presentations from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at the Discovery Center, 4750 Troost Ave. in Kansas City.
Sustainability starts with practices at home. Session presenters will talk about soil and water conservation, including how to use earthworms in composting, using native plants in landscaping that are adapted to our soils and climate, bee keeping; building rain barrels, and the importance of using mulch in gardening. Topics will also include electric cars, tips for weatherizing homes to make them more energy efficient, and more.
There will be hands-on activities for all ages. The event is free. “Eco Elvis” will perform his hits. Art created from recycled materials will be on display. The Surplus Exchange will also offer a pickup of electronic items for recycling such as computers and printers.
