Outdoor fun enjoyed at MDC's Discover Nature Field Days in Lee's Summit

Kansas City, Mo. – Fish were biting and arrows flying as youths learned about nature and outdoor skills at the Missouri Department of Conservation’s (MDC) annual Discover Nature Field Days. The event June 22-25 was attended by 527 youths in the Boys and Girls Clubs of Greater Kansas City. Fishing, archery, canoeing, and nature study were among the skills they enjoyed at MDC’s James A. Reed Memorial Wildlife Area in Lee’s Summit.

Storms hit the Kansas City area during the week, but the weather was quiet and, at times, pleasantly cool during the morning and afternoon field days activities. MDC staff, volunteers from the Osage Trails Chapter of Missouri Master Naturalists, and Missouri State Parks staff conducted field days. Youngsters from kindergarten to high school ages participated along with their adult leaders. The youths were divided into three age groups, and the groups rotated between activity stations during the day.

“Field days this year has been wonderful,” said Kathleen Savaiano, MDC conservation educator. “Between the staff, the kids’ positive attitudes, and the weather, it’s made for a perfect event.”

The youngest age group learned about snakes and frogs, went cane pole fishing, caught prairie insects, collected aquatic life in nets, and learned nature craft. Canoeing, fishing, and collecting aquatic life were a highlight for the middle group. The oldest youths fished, paddled canoes, shot pellet rifles and target archery.

Preparation and enthusiasm by the Boys and Girls Club adult leaders boosted the fun for everyone, Savaiano said.

“I had a little 6-year-old girl who was fishing say to me, ‘I want to thank you forever,’ “she said. “I had another 8-year-old boy say, ‘best day ever.’ “
