Kansas City, Mo. – The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) is adding more opportunities for visitors to enjoy programs during the weekends at the Anita B. Gorman Discovery Center, 4750 Troost Ave., in the heart of Kansas City. The Discovery Center will now be open 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. every Saturday, beginning July 1. Previously, the Discovery Center was open two Saturdays every month.
“We can now offer more programs on weekends when more people are free to attend,” said Stacey Davis, Discovery Center manager. “This will help us do more classes for adults who would like to learn how to fish, hunt, backpack, or learn other outdoor skills.”
The Discovery Center has classrooms with nature themes and an outdoor garden with native plants and trees. Short trails lead through the garden’s prairie, forest, and wetland eco-niches. There is also a natural play area for children. Indoors, visitors will find nature exhibits, a gift shop, and staff members who can answer questions about nature.
The Discovery Center will now be closed on Mondays to accommodate staffing additional Saturdays. The new hours will be 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturdays, and the center will be open until 7 p.m. on the first and third Tuesday of each month. The Discovery Center offers educational programs for all ages, youths and adults, as well as providing free meeting space for conservation-related community groups.
