PUXICO, Mo. -- More than 1,000 students visited the Missouri Department of Conservation's (MDC) Duck Creek Conservation Area and Mingo National Wildlife Refuge for today’s Eagle Days school activities. Classes from Kennett, Doniphan, Neelyville, Essex, Zalma and Risco attended eagle programs facilitated by visiting presenters from Dickerson Park Zoo in Springfield.
The live bald eagle, named Phoenix, played a role in bald eagle restoration in the 1980’s according to Pam Price, Education Director for Dickerson Park Zoo. Price said Phoenix is over 20 years old. Phoenix didn’t make it in the wild and has impacted education efforts throughout her life.
Students who attended today’s events learned from Phoenix and zoo presenters before heading out to view live, wild bald eagles through spotting scopes.
Eagle Days events open up to the public tomorrow (Saturday, Feb. 2) from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. All activities will begin at Mingo's Maintenance Shop. Mingo NWR is located on highway 51, north of Puxico. Please dress for cold weather, wear boots that can get muddy and bring binoculars. Oh, and most certainly, don’t forget to bring your kids!
