CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. - Rifle and pistol ranges at the Apple Creek Conservation Area opened this week after the completion of extensive upgrades that began in June. The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) operates the facility, which is located in northeast Cape Girardeau County, three miles east of New Wells on Route CC.
The rifle and pistol range opened Sept. 15 after being closed for approximately three months while renovation work was completed.
Improvements included raising the earthen bullet backstops on three ranges 15 additional feet, adding more shooting positions, incorporating target frames at seven and 15 yards, and various other safety features.
To make these improvements, MDC’s Design and Development Division excavated, hauled and compacted more than 40,000 cubic yards of dirt, poured more than 250 yards of high grade concrete and hauled and placed more than 3,000 tons of crushed rock limestone during the renovations.
“I’m proud of our crew for their hard work and determination to get the job done in the allotted time,” said Design and Development Southeast Regional Supervisor Ronnie Thurston.
“These additions meet the needs of our shooters while enabling the range to operate at the highest levels of safety and convenience,” said MDC Outdoor Skills Specialist Dee Dee Dockins.
The range continues to be a multi-use range for handgun and rifle shooting. Shooters have the option to shoot at seven, 15, 25, 50, 100, 200 and 275-yard distances.
