GRAY SUMMIT, Mo—Being outdoors in nature is a wonderful way to spend a day. Nature journaling is an excellent way to keep memories of those days. It also helps one grow and learn as a naturalist.
The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) is offering an overnight Nature Journaling Program at Shaw Nature Reserve in Gray Summit Wednesday and Thursday, June 1-2. The program begins at 10 a.m. on Wednesday and goes until 3 p.m. on Thursday, and is open to adults age 21 and older.
The prairies, wetlands, and woodlands of Shaw Nature Reserve offer a variety of nature journaling opportunities for this two day, overnight event. Trained MDC volunteer naturalists will provide guidance for using doodles, sketches, and writing to help create interesting and informative journal pages. Emphasis will also be given on improving observational skills to help participants gather useful and interesting content for their journals.
Participants will take what they learn and try out these techniques as they explore Shaw Nature Reserve. All levels of artists, beginner to expert, are welcome. The Nature Journaling Program is free, but reservations are required. Registration opens April 25, and anyone interested should call 636-441-4554.
Participants are encouraged to dress for the weather and bring all personal items needed for an overnight stay. Overnight accommodations will be provided at Shaw’s Dana Brown Overnight Center. Participants will be required to bring their own journaling supplies, food, beverages, and bedding.
Shaw Nature Reserve is located on the south side of Interstate 44 at exit #253 in Gray Summit, less than 10 miles past the Six Flags exit.
