Kansas City, Mo. – The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) will offer a chance to learn about bald eagles migrating through the Kansas City area during winter months. A Missouri River Eagle Day will be held from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 10, at LaBenite Park in Sugar Creek, just east of the Missouri 291 Bridge. Sugar Creek is a suburb in the Kansas City metro area.
MDC’s Missouri River Eagle Day event is free and all ages are welcome. A live eagle program will be presented by the Dickerson Park Zoo. The zoo staff usually has a bald eagle and a golden eagle on display. Both are eagles rehabilitated from injuries at the zoo. They cannot be released back into the wild but are now used for education and give visitors an up-close look at eagles.
This Eagle Day event will also offer conservation discovery stations and activities. Plus the park overlooks the Missouri River. The river helps attract migrating bald eagles to the Kansas City metro area in winter. Eagles feed on fish from the river. Weather and food availability often dictates where winter eagles linger. It is uncertain if any wild eagles will be at the LaBenite Park for this event. But displays and presentations will provide interesting eagle lore and staff will be available to answer questions.
