SPANISH LAKE, Mo. — Birdwatching is one of the fastest growing outdoor activities in America. It’s a fun activity that can help people of all ages discover nature. The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) is offering a beginner’s birding class to help kick start birdwatching skills for new birdwatchers at Columbia Bottom Conservation Area Saturday, March 30 from 1-3 p.m.
Participants will learn about the basics of birding and the birds that can be found at Columbia Bottom during spring. With its mosaic of habitats, the area is home to many different bird species, both permanent and migratory. According to eBird.org, Columbia Bottom boasts 286 of birds documented on the area, and the St. Louis Audubon Society has designated it a birding hotspot. The class will also include a hike on the area with MDC naturalists where visitors can explore its variety of feathered inhabitants.
The birding class is free and open to those ages eight and up. All equipment needed, including bird guides and binoculars, will be provided. Participants should dress for the weather and be prepared with footwear suitable for hiking. Columbia Bottom Conservation Area is located at 801 Strodtman Road in north St. Louis County. The area can be reached by taking the Riverview Drive Exit from I-270 and traveling north approximately 3 miles.
