KIRKSVILLE, Mo. — Looking for something new to try this winter? During the next two months, the Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) is offering several fishing workshops to help kids and families gain angling skills and confidence. The FREE workshops are part of MDC’s Discover Nature—Fishing program.
MDC will offer the following fishing workshops in the Hannibal area:
- Discover Nature—Fishing Volunteer Instructor Training and Yearly Planning Meeting on Jan. 24 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Homebank Community Room, 3817 McMasters Ave. in Hannibal. The volunteer instructors will be taught the curriculum and receive helpful tips from current instructors. Those who are passionate about fishing and interested in passing it on to future generations are encouraged to attend.
- Ice Fishing 101 on Jan. 31 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Hunnewell Lake Conservation Area (CA) headquarters. The class will focus on the basic knowledge an individual needs to ice fish safely. Fishing opportunities will be dependent on the weather. Hunnewell Lake CA is located on Hwy Z three miles north of Hunnewell. Youth must be accompanied by an adult.
- The Basics of Trout Fishing on Feb. 10 from 6 to 9 p.m. at the MDC Hannibal office, 8965 Hwy 36, Suite 1 in Hannibal. This class will focus on the history, habitat, life cycle, and equipment it takes to catch a rainbow trout in Missouri’s waterways. Anyone under 16 must be accompanied by an adult.
MDC will offer the following fishing classes in Kirksville:
- The Basics of Trout Fishing on Jan. 20 from 6 to 9 p.m. at Truman State University Farm, located on West La Harpe St. in Kirksville. This class will focus on the history, habitat, life cycle and equipment it takes to catch a rainbow trout in Missouri’s waterways. Anyone under 16 must be accompanied by an adult.
- Discover Nature – Fishing Program Volunteer Instructor Training and Yearly Planning Meeting on Feb. 7 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the MDC Northeast Regional Office, 3500 S. Baltimore in Kirksville. Those attending will be taught the curriculum and receive helpful tips from current instructors. Those who are passionate about fishing and interested in passing it on to future generations are encouraged to attend.
