SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – Many homeowners are discovering the benefits of landscaping with native plants. Plants that are naturally adapted to their surroundings tend to be less dependent on pesticides and watering hoses and they provide better habitat for butterflies, songbirds and other local wildlife.

Homeowners can learn more about using native plants at the Native Plant Sale and Workshops that will be from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on April 6 at the Missouri Department of Conservation’s (MDC) Springfield Conservation Nature Center. In addition to featuring several businesses that will be selling native plants, this event will also feature several guest speakers that will discuss benefits of incorporating native plants into landscaping strategies.

Workshops include “Gardening with Native Edibles” from 9:30-10:15 a.m., “Missouri Native Trees and Shrubs” from 10:30-11:15 a.m., and “Cities and Native Plants” from 11:30 a.m.-12:15 p.m.

The event is free and open to all ages. No registration is required. Call the Springfield Conservation Nature Center, 417-888-4237, to request a flier of the day’s activities. The Nature Center is located in southeast Springfield at 4601 S. Nature Center Way.
