LEBANON, Mo. – To Missouri citizens, black bears are a source of fascination, curiosity – and, in some cases, concern.
People can learn more about bears at the Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) program “Black Bears of Missouri” on Sept 25 at the Mills Center, 650 Mills Drive, in Lebanon. The free program will be 6:30-8 p.m.
MDC Furbearer Biologist Laura Conlee and other MDC staff will discuss black bear biology, the current bear research underway in the state, and how Missourians can become bear aware and co-exist with these large mammals.
Under most circumstances, black bears pose no threat to humans. However, they are inquisitive and intelligent and it’s these traits that sometimes pose problems for landowners. Bears are attracted to a variety of food sources such as bird feeders, game feeders, trash, or livestock feed. Allowing bears to access these food sources can cause problems for both people and bears. Consequently, humans shouldn’t do anything to purposely encourage bears to come to their farm or to stay on their property.
