LEWISTOWN, Mo. — The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) invites new dove hunters, age 11 and up, to a discover nature dove clinic and mentored hunt on opening weekend of the 2017 dove season.
The clinic will take place Aug. 31, at 5 p.m., at Deer Ridge Conservation Area, north of Lewistown on the Fabius River. Participants will learn about dove management, regulations, hunting strategies, distance judging, safety, and wing shooting practice. The following morning, hunters will have an opportunity to practice the skills learned during the clinic, and hunt doves under the guidance of mentors.
“This dove clinic and mentored hunt will offer a free, safe introduction to migratory bird hunting, and an opportunity to hunt alongside an experienced mentor,” said MDC Outdoor Skills Specialist Rob Garver. “This is a great chance to learn safe and effective wing-shooting technique, and hopefully bring home food to put on the table.”
Hunters may bring their own mentor or one will be provided for them. Hunters may also bring their own firearms and ammunition, or both will be provided for them.
Hunters age 16 years and older must obtain a small game and migratory bird permit, and an apprenticeship permit if they are not hunter education certified or exempt form certification.
