CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. –The mighty Mississippi River is an exciting place to spend a day. People of all ages are invited to “A Day on the River” hosted by the Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC), Southern Illinois University (SIU) and the American Land Conservancy (ALC) on Saturday, Oct. 1. The event will be from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Red Star Access in downtown Cape Girardeau and at the Middle Mississippi River Wetland Field Station in East Cape Girardeau, IL.
According to the event coordinator, MDC Naturalist Angela Pierce, this event will be fun for the whole family.
“Families can visit the Missouri side to enjoy boat rides, fishing, live animals and crafts, and there will also be boat rides on the Mississippi throughout the day,” Pierce said. “Just pick up your free ticket for boat rides at the information table at Red Star Access.”
On the Illinois side of the river, Pierce said there will be a bird-watching hike, a river model and tiny wetland creatures to discover. Professionals from various agencies will be on hand to help participants learn about wetland conservation.
“The Mississippi River is not only a huge part of Cape Girardeau heritage, but it’s also home to diverse wildlife,” Pierce said. “We hope lots of people will join us for this unique event to celebrate the largest river ecosystem in North America.”
