HANNIBAL, Mo. – The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) invites youth and families to attend a free frogging clinic July 8 at Ted Shanks Conservation Area near Ashburn.
As part of the MDC’s Discover Nature – Fishing program, this frogging clinic will help people of all ages learn about Missouri’s native frogs, and various methods of catching them.
"Catching frogs by hand or hand net is exciting, since kids can get closer to frogs than to other small game species," said MDC Angler Education Assistant Chelsea Jeffries. "Besides, most youngsters enjoy chasing a jumping, splashing, evasive frog around weeds and water."
The event will start 6 p.m. Friday, July 8, with a classroom session at Ted Shanks Conservation Area, 3643 Pike 145 near Ashburn. Following the classroom course, attendees will head outside for a hands-on portion.
“Once we get done with the classroom portion, participants can try the different techniques and have guidance from staff and volunteers,” said Jeffries. “Our ultimate goal is for everyone to leave happy and having learned something new!”
Some equipment will be available, but supply is limited so participants are encouraged to bring their own flashlights, headlamps, boots, or shoes that can get wet and muddy, as well as a valid fishing license for anyone over the age of 16.
