St. CHARLES, Mo.—Whether you’re interested in exploring the sport of hunting or looking to take up target or clay bird shooting, learning more about firearms and being safe and comfortable around them is an important first step. Learning shooting skills can be a gateway to a lifetime of wholesome and rewarding outdoor recreation.

It will explore rules for safe gun handling, maintenance, cleaning and safe storage as well.

“Hunting and shooting sports are two fun ways to spend quality time with friends, family, or on your own. There are many opportunities in Missouri to enjoy each of these activities,” said MDC Outdoor Education Center Supervisor Bryant Hertel.

Key topics the class will cover include:

  • Firearm safety and safety equipment
  • Why knowledge, skills, and attitude are important
  • Types of firearms and their actions
  • How each action functions
  • Ammunition
  • How to choose a firearm
  • The importance of maintaining and cleaning your firearm
  • Storing firearms safely

The program will be held in the education center classroom and will offer information on other programs and hands-on experience opportunities to help new shooters get started in hunting and shooting sports.

“If you are interested in learning about firearms or want to learn how to shoot a particular kind of firearm. This will be a great place to start,” Hertel said.
