DEFIANCE, Mo.—Whether it’s for hunting upland birds or waterfowl, competitive trap or skeet shooting, or simply busting a few clays for fun, learning to shoot a shotgun correctly and safely is an activity the whole family can enjoy.
The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) is offering a Family Basic Shotgun Class on Tuesday, Sept. 10 from 5:30-7:30 p.m. to introduce newcomers to the sport. It will be held at MDC’s August A. Busch Shooting Range and Outdoor Education Center in Defiance. The class is free and open to adults, families, and children age 11 and up.
The program aims to teach new shooters the basics of shotgun shooting with the guidance of MDC shooting range staff. Participants will learn the fundamentals of the sport, which include: the different types of shotguns that are available, how to properly be fitted for a shotgun based on body size, and how to use it. MDC staff will cover shotgun operation, along with proper shooting stance and techniques. Safety measures and equipment, including recommended ear and eye protection, will also be a primary topic of the class. Finally, the course will discuss firearm maintenance, and safe storage.
Participants will start in the classroom for basic instruction, then move to the field for hands-on, live fire shooting practice. All firearms, ammunition, safety equipment, and targets will be supplied. Visitors are welcome to bring their own firearm and ammunition to the live-fire session if they choose.

The August A. Busch Shooting Range and Outdoor Education Center is located at 3550 Route D in Defiance, approximately five miles west of Highway 94.
