CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – The Missouri Department of Conservation's (MDC) Cape Girardeau Conservation Nature Center welcomes 12 to 15 year olds to try out their survival skills on Saturday, March 22, from 1 to 3 p.m.

“We aim to develop our youth into individuals who will be confident in the outdoors,” said Nature Center Manager Sara Turner. “This event will help teens gain confidence and try out skills that will assist them on future outdoor excursions if they would get lost or hurt.”

Being lost or stranded can be a scary experience, especially if you don’t know how to utilize the wild resources around you, Turner said. In this program, teens can expect to learn the appropriate steps to take if they ever find themselves stranded or lost. This includes learning how to build appropriate shelter, starting a fire with natural resources, finding safe drinking water, and identifying a few wild edibles.

Turner said safety skills are one of the most important aspects of spending time outdoors.

“We teach safety first, so the fun never stops,” Turner said. She added that this program is one of many the Missouri Department of Conservation uses to help people discover nature.

Registration is required for this free program. For more information on this or other programs at the Cape Girardeau Conservation Nature Center, go online to www.mdc.mo.gov or call (573) 290-5218.
