KANSAS CITY Mo -- Using tree-harvest methods that promote healthy, sustainable forests recently earned Travis Yake the 2011 Kansas City Regional Logger Award.
The award is presented by the Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) to recognize loggers who take extra time and care to protect forest resources as trees are harvested.
Yake owns Yake Timber Co. of Ozark, Mo., and his crews have worked in the west- central counties of Missouri that are within MDC’s Kansas City Region. A logger for 15 years, Yake is one of only eight certified Master Loggers in the state, a program that sets high standards for education and experience. He is a previous winner of the Southwest Region Logger of the Year Award.
Criteria for the award includes good working relationships with landowners and foresters, minimal damage to remaining trees and resources, soil-erosion prevention, aesthetics of a site after harvest, safety, utilization of harvested trees, the desire to address wildlife management concerns and using proper forest-management techniques. The logger must have completed the Professional Timber Harvester’s Training Program sponsored by the Missouri Forest Products Association and MDC.
Eight regional awards are given throughout the state. One will also be selected as the State Logger Award winner.
Crader Distributing Company of Marble Hill, Mo., which distributes STIHL Outdoor Power Equipment, sponsors the logger-award program and donates safety kits to award recipients.
