CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. — The Cape Girardeau Conservation Nature Center is offering a free fishing event on Saturday, April 30, to celebrate the grand opening of a new ADA-accessible fishing dock and marsh boardwalk at its kids’ fishing pond. The event is open to children ages 15 and younger and is a chance for kids of all abilities to learn about fishing from the hook to the frying pan.
“All children should have the opportunity to experience the joys of catching a fish,” said Nature Center Manager Sara Turner.
Kids’ Fishing will run from 8:30-11:30 a.m. Youth groups are welcome and registration is not required. Activities offered throughout the day will include a fishing, casting range, fish cleaning, fish frying and fish-related crafts.
Volunteers will be on hand to help young anglers. Equipment will be provided, but children can bring their own if they prefer. Parents are welcome to help, but only one pole may be used between an adult helper and a child. Adults may not fish by themselves in the Kids’ Fishing Pond, but can fish at the other two lakes located in Cape County Park.
The Kids’ Fishing Pond is open daily and equipment can be checked out from the Nature Center from 8 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. Tuesday – Saturday.
