CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – The Missouri Department of Conservation’s Cape Girardeau Nature Center will host professional fisherman Josh Gowan this Saturday, March 16, from 1 to 2:30 p.m. Fisheries management biologist Salvador Mondragon said this is a great opportunity to learn what it would be like to have a professional fishing career.
“Josh will spend some time with us describing how he got started in a career of fishing, and what it takes to catch the really big fish,” Mondragon said. “Many people think of fishing as a recreational activity, and while it is a fun activity to do in your spare time, the fishing industry is big with all kinds of possibilities.”
Gowan’s professional fishing boat will be on display and there will be giveaways. This program is open to all ages with no registration required.
“We hope people will stop by, visit with Josh, visit the Nature Center exhibits and take some time to consider the importance of fishing,” Mondragon said.
This event is part of the Cape Nature Center’s 2019 theme, “The year of the fish.” The nature center will host programs throughout the year to teach fishing tips and answer questions about various fish species. All participants who attend six fish-related programs or capture six select fish species on their own throughout the year will be entered to win a drawing for a beginner’s tackle box with two fishing poles, different types of lures, hooks, bobbers, weights, stringers and a fish identification guide. The prize will be drawn at the end of 2019.
