Mary Burns is a vibrant, versatile artist whose watercolors speak of her deep love of the beauty of nature, whether birds, animals, or landscapes. Mary has lifelong experience as an artist from her beginnings as a young girl in Brazil. She has a degree in Visual Art from the Federal University of the Valley of San Francisco and has worked as and artist and elementary teacher in her home country. Mary has lived in the United States since 2015, and has dedicated herself to producing pieces of the highest quality art that evoke her love of nature, people, and the world around her.

Her beautiful watercolor art will be on display at Powder Valley Conservation Nature Center throughout the month of July.

Is there a better way to spend a summer day than spending time outdoors? Join us as we sample different ways you can enjoy conservation right in your own backyard. We will spend time learning about the different plants and animals of Missouri, practicing mini archery and other fun activities in the comfort of the nature center and the surrounding woods.

This minicamp will take place at Powder Valley Conservation Nature Center. Please bring a water bottle, a lunch, and any other supplies that you might need for the duration of the camp.

Please register each camper that is planning to attend.

*Parents/guardians will receive a waiver for each camper. Parents/guardians will drop-off campers via waiver and emergency contact form.

Nature Journaling for Beginners: In-Person

July 31, 2021 9:00 – 11:00 a.m.

Join us for the in-person portion of our nature journaling series! We will meet at Powder Valley Conservation Nature Center, in the main lobby of the visitor center. From there, the group will have the option to either participate in hiking while nature journaling, nature journaling while seated outside, and nature journaling from inside.

Please bring water, sunscreen, a notebook or sketchbook, pen, pencil, and wear appropriate clothing for outdoor exploration.

Come and meet the Missouri Department of Conservation newest team member. This team member has highly specialized skills and abilities that no one else possesses. He also has four paws, fur, and a nose that is 40 times greater than ours! You might say MDC has gone to the dogs. K9-Tex and his handler Cpl. Alan Lamb will be at the nature center to explain and show what it is they do to help protect wildlife. Tex is also going to show off his amazing nose and ability to detect scent.

Are you a Scout wanting to get closer to earning a badge? Join us at August A. Busch Memorial Conservation Area on Saturday, August 7, 2021 for the scout event of the year! Scouts will be able to visit multiple stations and complete activities that will satisfy a multitude of badges. The following stations will be on site:

• Wilderness Survival

• Water Conservation*

• Orienteering*

• Mammal Study

• Bird Study

• Archery*

• Canoeing*

• Geocaching

• Forestry

• Fishing*

• Environmental Science

• Forest Bathing

• Hiking

• Reptile and Amphibian Study

* Indicates stations that require reservation through email, due to limited spaces

If you wish to attend this event, you must register each participant here. if you wish to add an activity that has limited spaces available to your registration (see * in list above):

This event is designed for Scouts of America and Girl Scouts.

Scouts are responsible for securing Merit Badge Counselors for the event.

Scouts must bring their Merit Badge Cards.

Food and drinks will be available for purchase through the bait shop concession stand.

Have one more adventure before school starts! Geocaching is a modern-day treasure hunt that combines technology and nature into an adventure in the great outdoors. We will start the program in the classroom but will be exploring Powder Valley Conservation Nature Center in the great outdoors so please come prepared for the weather.

This virtual clinic will include information on the following topics to better prepare hunters for dove season:

-What to do after the hunt:

*After a successful hunt

*How to clean a dove

*Cooking and eating

You must register with a valid email, as the virtual link will be sent by 11am on the day of the program to that email. This clinic is open to anyone interested in learning about dove hunting. It is required for those drawn for the Youth Dove Hunt being held at the Columbia Bottom Conservation Area. To register for the youth dove hunt, go to https://short.mdc.mo.gov/ZHv.
