If you want to learn about the shotgun fundamentals from the very beginning or improve your skill at skeet, trap or 5-stand, this One-on-One Shotgun Instruction course is for you! Our instructors will help you get started and work with you on the basics to prepare you for moving on to each discipline. To register or for more information, please call 816-249-3194. It offers a quick escape from suburbia and concrete. Maple Woods is a mature maple and oak forest with an understory of paw paws. Join a Conservation Educator to become familiar this 1 mile moderately strenuous loop trail to discuss fall happenings and to pause to connect to this exceptional place.

Join us at the Discovery Center to celebrate Birdability Week 2021! This event will be an accessible and inclusive outing welcoming current and budding bird enthusiasts. Beginner birders are particularly encouraged to attend, along with birders of any level that aspire to nurture others to discover the delights of birding. Our 45-minute outing will take place on Discovery Center grounds, following a 0.25-mile flat, paved trail with a few benches along the way. We’ll travel the trail at a leisurely pace alongside forest, prairie and aquatic habitats to enjoy a variety of birds. Holiday traditions are something near and dear to many of us, and one of the best fall activities is carving pumpkins. Bring your family out for a morning of pumpkin carving at Parma Woods, but not in a traditional way. We'll be using .22 rimfire rifles to "carve" ghosts, vampires, cats, and other Halloween favorites into the pumpkins. Before we shoot, there will be a short introduction to firearm safety and handling in the classroom to accommodate shooters of all skillsets. Borrow one of our rifles, or feel free to bring your own. Ammo will be supplied. Dress for the weather and bring drinking water.

Nature may sometimes seem creepy, but every creature has a job in the web of life. Search for the next clue to guide you on a unique exploration while meeting costumed and real life “creepy” critters at staffed stations along the trail. For this all-outdoor program, dress for the weather. Total walking distance is about one mile. Start at the Missouri Tree Trail trailhead to pick up a clue sheet to help you find your way. Staff will be at various stations with “creepy” critters and to help guide you.

Project Feeder Watch turns your love of feeding birds into scientific discoveries. Join us as we participate in this citizen scientist project. Your bird counts help the Cornell Lab track what is happening in your own backyard and helps track long-term trends in bird distribution and abundance. Birders of all ages and skill levels welcome. We'll focus on the characteristics of animal skulls and discover how variation in anatomy, including dentition, can reveal the identity of an animal.
