Have you just bought a new pistol and want to become more familiar with it? Do you need some help getting started as a new shooter or haven’t shot for a while and want to get back into it? Is there a technique that you want to learn or improve upon? This one-on-one instruction is for you! It is BY APPOINTMENT ONLY. Registration required (adults: ages 14-17 with an adult mentor) When we think about floating in Missouri many of us head to the cold clear waters of the Ozarks. Did you know we have some local rivers you can get on just minutes away? These rivers run muddy, but the landscape can still let you escape without the driving effort. Join conservation educators to learn about a local tributary to the Missouri rive, the Platte River, in Platte Falls Conservation Area. Participants may use their own kayak or canoe, but canoes can be provided along with paddles and lifejackets, if needed. Bring snacks and plenty to drink as no food or drink will be provided. Social distancing will be observed, and face coverings are optional. Participants will be e-mailed the location and other details. Prior paddling experience is preferred. This is an all outdoor program so dress for the weather. You will receive an e-mail from the instructor the day prior to the event if weather conditions indicate a need to cancel the program.

Registration required (ages 16+) We all know the iconic WWI Museum, but have you ever explored the grounds and surrounding neighborhoods on foot? This urban hike will be around three miles at a moderate pace on sidewalks and will include multiple staircases. We will explore the neighborhoods west and north of the museum and discover why nature adds value to our built spaces. We will also discuss hiking safety and other urban hikes in KC. The instructor will e-mail the exact meeting location to the participants the week prior to the hike. Lesson 3: Five Common Missouri Fish-Their Anatomy, Habitat, and Life Cycle combines instruction with hands-on fishing to teach young anglers and families basic biological concepts and functions specific to largemouth bass, bluegill, hybrid sunfish, channel catfish and rainbow trout. Participants will learn the different components of fish anatomy and their functions. In addition, participants will learn about various types of fish habitat and aquatic food webs.

Lesson 4: Fishing with Lures and Fishing Regulations combines instruction with hands-on fishing to teach young anglers and families how to properly select a fishing lure based on desired fish species, weather and water conditions. In addition, participants will learn how to identify and understand fishing regulations. Fishing equipment, instructors/coaches and bait/lures will be provided. All children ages 7-15 must be accompanied by an adult at all times. Participants must have completed Lessons 1 and 2 prior to attending Lesson 3 & 4.

Participants do not need a fishing permit to fish during this program.

Participants will be asked to maintain safe social distance from staff and other participants who are not their family members during this program.

First thing in the morning we'll spend a little time catching some fish, then we'll demonstrate several easy methods of cleaning common Missouri fish, and participants will have an opportunity to try their hand at cleaning some of the fish that they caught.

We'll finish up the morning by using the fish that we clean to demonstrating some delicious recipes for everyone to sample.

Missouri Department of Conservation will provide rods, tackle, bait, knives, cleaning boards and fishing coaches.

Participants do NOT need a fishing permit to fish during this program.

All children must be accompanied by a registered adult.

Each participant must register individually. Please email the instructor for assistance with registration.

Join Alix Daniel for a presentation on how to get started with mushroom hunting, when and where to find mushrooms and how to properly ID mushrooms.
