Whether you spend time reading IN nature or reading ABOUT nature, reading and nature offer an abundance of emotional and intellectual benefits. Runge Nature Center is excited to introduce its new “Into the Words” book discussion series. For the first session, bring your favorite nature-themed book for an informal “show and tell” discussion. This will be a great way to build your 2023 reading list! If there’s enough interest, “Into the Words” will become a bi-monthly book discussion group. Coffee and tea will be provided. Come join us for some trout fishing at Veterans Park Lake in Fulton. We will be catching and keeping our fish, and fish-cleaning techniques will be demonstrated. Equipment and instruction will be provided so no experience is necessary. Meet MDC staff at the lake. All participants ages 16 and 64 must come prepared with a Missouri fishing license; each participant must have a trout permit to possess trout. Registration required. Ages 6+

Eagles, hawks, falcons, and vultures captivate us with their power and grace. Discover where to find these common Missouri raptors and how to identify them. After the classroom portion of the program, we will venture to the outskirts of Jefferson City to try and catch a glimpse of these spectacular birds. Runge will provide round-trip transportation and binoculars (or feel free to bring your own). Be sure to dress for the weather. Registration required. Ages 13+

Missouri's Eastern Bluebirds are making a comeback and it's due in large part to caring citizens creating suitable nesting cavities called bird boxes. Learn about this beautiful bird and build your own bluebird box to place at your home. All materials are provided. Dress for the weather as this program will be outdoors. Grab your hiking stick and join a guided hike at Graham Cave State Park (Montgomery County); 3.5 miles moderate. Meet at the Runge Nature Center or the trailhead. Some transportation is provided but carpooling may be necessary. Hike leaders will contact participants before the hike to give directions if needed. Wear sturdy shoes, dress for the weather, bring a water bottle, and pack a lunch/snack. Registration required. Ages 18+

Fly-tying is a great way to customize a fishing lure to a specific type of fish or a particular stretch of stream. It’s also way to get an added sense of accomplishment knowing that you caught a fish with a lure you made. Join us for a beginner's fly-tying program where you can advance your skills and learn new patterns.

Have you ever heard of tree cookies? Although they are lots of fun to decorate, they’re not for eating. Tree cookies are round, cross-section slices of a tree. We’ll use recycled materials to decorate our tree cookies, so join us to not only create an art piece for your home, but also to give a tree new life! All materials will be provided. Spring brings warm, wet weather...which means the salamanders are coming! The best time to find spotted salamanders is when they make their annual migration to their breeding ponds during the first warm, evening rain of the spring. Join us at Runge as we explore the migration and breeding habits of these slimy, secretive salamanders.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Due to the specific weather conditions required, this will be a short-notice program that may occur any day of the week. Once we know the salamanders are migrating, we will contact participants via phone and email the morning of the program and announce a specific start time. Please be sure to wear appropriate clothing and footwear. Registration required. All ages invited.

Trumpeter swans are the largest and one of the most beautiful birds found in Missouri. They are also one of the greatest conservation success stories in the world. In 1935, only 69 birds remained in the United States. Today there are well over 63,000 of them in North America. Join us to celebrate this magnificent comeback by observing these swans at Binder Lake in Jefferson City. *NOTE: Due to our inability to accurately predict when the swans may arrive at Binder, this is a short-notice program that can occur any day of the week. We will call participants the day before the program to give time and location at Binder. Please make sure to provide a phone number during online registration. Dress for the weather. NATIVE PLANTS IN A FORMAL LANDSCAPE is the topic of this month’s program. If you have wondered how to use native plants with landscaping that is more tailored, join us to hear from Jennifer Sieradzki, horticulture manager at Shaw Nature Reserve near St. Louis. Jennifer will discuss which native plants work well in formal landscape designs. She will also offer techniques for keeping your natives looking formal. You CAN enjoy native plants and help pollinators in a structured landscape setting! Registration required. Ages 14+

The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC), and Morgan County Natural Resource Conservation Service (NRCS) and Soil and Water Conservation District (SWCD) will be hosting a Pond Management Workshop on Thursday March 23, 2023, from 6:30 – 8:30 p.m at the Stover High School at 701 N. Oak Street, Stover, MO.

This workshop will cover a wide variety of topics including, pond site selection, pond construction, pond stocking, fisheries management, aquatic vegetation management, pond watershed management and wildlife issues. Professionals from MDC, NRCS and SWCD will give presentations and will be available to answer questions. There will also be some very useful literature and brochures on pond management available. This class is geared for adults, but children are welcome to attend.
