Registration required (adults) The second week of April is usually the peak of spring wildflower blooms here at the Discovery Center. Bloodroot, flowering dogwood, trout lilies, bluebells and a bouquet of other spring beauties will be on showcase in our native landscape beds. Stroll with a naturalist to learn about these ephemerals and discover where to see the best spring wildflower blooms in Kansas City. If accommodations are needed, please e-mail the instructor after registering and at least one week prior to the program.

With turkey season right around the corner many will be getting their calls ready for the season. This program is designed for new turkey hunters, or anyone wanting to learn more about turkey calls. We’ll learn about the different types of calls, what sounds they make, what they mean, and how to best use them for a given situation. If you have turkey calls at home and would like to learn to be more proficient with them, please bring them with you.

Leave your phone at home and take this chance to relax and reconnect with nature. Time in nature is healing, an opportunity to slow down and focus.

Class may take place outdoors if weather permits. Otherwise, we'll practice indoors with suggestions to further your nature time after class. This program is beginner-friendly and mats are provided; however, you are welcome to bring your own mat and other props. Please wear comfortable clothing and we encourage you to bring your own water bottle.

Participants under 18 need to be accompanied by a participating adult. Please register both people. Only those registered may attend program.

Are you a trap shooter looking to spice up your game in a new and exciting way? Join us for our glow clays program where we put a new spin on this classic game. Think “Cosmic Bowling”, for trap . We have introduced UV light to the trap field at night. This causes the factory paint on the clay pigeons to fluoresce or “Glow” in the dark as they are thrown from the trap house, making a unique glowing target.

Minimum age 16 and you must be familiar with and experienced in classic trap and safe firearms handling. Additional Range safety officers will be available if assistance is needed.

If you harvest a turkey this spring; mounting the fan is a great way to create a decorative keepsake that will last for years to come. This virtual program will show you the supplies you will need and take you step by step through the process.

Cooking outdoors is a great complement to many other outdoor activities. Whether you are camping, fishing, hunting, or enjoying your backyard, this program will add another element to your outdoor experience. This session will focus on the common equipment needed for cooking any fish and different cooking methods.

Lesson 3: “Five Common Missouri Fish” combines instruction with hands-on fishing in order to teach young anglers and families the anatomy, habitat, diet, and life cycle of five common Missouri fish.

Lesson 4: “Fishing with Lures and Fishing Regulations” combines instruction with hands-on fishing to teach young anglers and families to identify different kinds of lures and to grasp an understanding of applicable fishing regulations and why we have them.

Fishing equipment, instructors/coaches and bait/lures will be provided.

Ages 7 and above. All children ages 7-15 must be accompanied by an adult at all times.

Participants DO NOT need a fishing permit to fish during this program.

Each participant will need to register for this program individually on the Missouri Department of Conservation Discover Fishing website.

You have learned the basics of shooting a shotgun, now what? This class will show you the games of Trap, Skeet, and 5-Stand Sporting Clays, all of which are known as Shotgun Shooting Sports. Each game has it own unique traits that make them enjoyable. We will talk about how to mount the gun, hold points, the flight of the birds, break points, forward allowance, plus various other mechanics. We will provide 20-gauge shotguns and ammunition for those who do not have one. If you plan to use your own, bring a minimum of 50 rounds of new ammunition for your firearm. Make sure all firearms are unloaded before arriving at the range. There should be no live ammunition, or uncased firearms inside the classroom. Please leave all firearms in the vehicle until the class is dismissed including all concealed carry handguns and magazines.
