MDC is offering new online programs that allow people to attend virtually. Please check our class listings to see what classes are limited, in-person classes or virtual classes.

Register by February 18

Date: Thursday, February 18, 2021 - 2:00pm to 2:30pm

Continue on the maple sugaring journey as we discover what to do with all of that sap. Last month we learned all about tree tapping and this month we complete the sugaring process. Discover what it takes to make one of the forest’s sweetest gifts, maple syrup. This program is geared for ages 8 and up but students as young as 6 can register.

Date: Thursday, February 18, 2021 - 6:00pm to 7:00pm

Take a (virtual) trip with us and float down a Missouri stream to discover plants and animals that depend on clean water to survive and flourish. Each month a different applique block based on this year’s theme, River Trail Discoveries, will be revealed. February’s applique block and presentation will feature the unique Heelsplitter mussel. Participants need to attend this virtual program to receive the applique block/pattern for that month which will be e-mailed after the presentation. Ages 16 and up. Registration Required. Participants will receive an e-mail with a link to the program both 24 hours and 1 hour prior to the start of the virtual presentation.

Join us for another in this series of virtual programs. We will be reading children's books with nature topic! Covering winter animals, snow, hibernation, and much more! Join us for Nature Tales! Date: Friday, February 19, 2021 - 2:00pm to 2:30pm

Trout are a popular, cold-water catch in Missouri. During winter months, trout are stocked into many waters throughout the state and you may be wondering where to cast a line nearby for a chance at one of these fun fish. In this virtual program, we’ll highlight two lakes within 30-minutes of Cape Girardeau, MO and show you what to expect when you get to the water. All ages are welcome, though this program will be more appropriate for adults ages 12 and up.

Never be lost in the woods again! Join us for an informative orienteering program and learn how to find your way in the wilderness. We will teach how to use a compass and read a topographical map. Recommended for ages 10 and up.

Dreaming of day trips with the family as spring approaches? Join us for a new virtual series: Best of the Ozarks as we highlight some great places to discover nature in our area with your family. Meet one of the smallest turtles in North America, the eastern musk turtle. This tiny turtle spends most of its time under water and is seldom seen. We will take an in-depth look at this pint-sized reptile and find out why it is sometimes called a stinkpot.

Date: Tuesday, February 23, 2021 - 7:00pm to 8:00pm

Wait, What? Yes, you read that right. Even though eastern white pine trees are not native to Missouri, they are often in urban areas and urban landscapes since they grow easy and fast, and they are a beautiful tree. In this program, we will discuss various pine (or other evergreen) trees, including Missouri's only native pine tree species, and recipes using pine needles. The recipes we will be covering will be pine needle tea and pine needle cookies, using needles from eastern white pine trees.
**Even this is intended for adults, this program can be enjoyed by the whole family.

This is a virtual program. You will receive an email 24 hours in advance with the Webex link, and then again, the morning of the program.

Date: Wednesday, February 24, 2021 - 10:00am to 11:00am

Registration required (ages 10+) Winter birding can be a rewarding nature experience in your own backyard. Join a Discovery Center naturalist to learn basic tips and tricks to identify our local feathered friends. This virtual program will also cover habitat, bird feeding and specific equipment that can help when bird watching.

Everyone loves a good story, and we have plenty of them here at the nature center! You and your little one can watch and listen as our Naturalist reads a couple nature stories. This program is designed for children 0-6 years of age, but is open to all ages.

Winter weather may be keeping you and your little ones indoors, but that doesn’t mean you have to be bored! Join MDC Naturalists every Thursday in February for a virtual reading of a different nature-themed book. Then, stick around for some interesting education related to that week’s theme. All books fall within a K-3 interest level. Please note that this a virtual program.

The hush of winter has fallen over Missouri. Nature’s pace has slowed but there are still mysteries to explore. Join us for a few 30- minute virtual programs hosted by our Runge Naturalists, each exploring the wonders of winter!

What is making that noise you hear on your evening walk or as you sit around a late winter fire? Do you know “whooo” it might be? Join us as we learn about the owls that call Missouri home certain times of year and those that spend the entire year here. This is a virtual program that will take place on the WebEx platform.
