Join avid outdoorsman Don Brink for an introduction to backpacking. Learn about the types of equipment, things beginners should know, and places to go in the Ozarks. After attending this program you’ll be ready to head out on your own. Ages 10-adult.

Welcome autumn as we hike the varied habitats at the Ruth and Paul Henning Conservation Area. We’ll stop and take in the views and have lunch along the way. Meet at the nature center and carpool. Hike is five miles and rated moderate to difficult. This program is for women only. Ages 14-adult. Girls ages 14-17 accompanied by an adult female are welcome. Pack a lunch, water, and dress for the weather. The trail is rocky and appropriate footwear is a must.

Adding native plants to your yard will help provide valuable habitat for birds, butterflies, and other wildlife. Stop by anytime to purchase native plants and pick up information on how to include native plantings in your landscape, what plants to select, and how they benefit wildlife. Plant vendors include: Ozark Soul Native Plants, Missouri Wildflower Nursery, and Smiling Sun Gardens.

Enjoy a fun-filled morning of monarch butterfly-themed activities and crafts as we celebrate their migration during the Native Plant Sale. Stop by any time to view caterpillars and butterflies; participate in citizen science as we catch and tag butterflies on their journey to Mexico. Play a game, go on a butterfly scavenger hunt, and make a monarch headband. Learn more about their incredible migration and conservation efforts to help stop their declining populations during a program from 10 –10:30 A.M. in the Shoal Creek classroom. Enjoy festival activities before and after the program.

National Hunting and Fishing Day (NHF)- Each year on the forth Saturday in September we celebrate NHF day by providing one free hour of shooting on the rifle/pistol range, shotgun patterning range, or the archery range and for shotgun shooters we allow one free round of trap or skeet. Bring your own firearms and ammunition to participate and regular check in, hours, and fees apply for other hours/rounds needed.

Join Outdoor Skills Specialist Greg Collier as he shares his knowledge on whitetail deer hunting. Learn the basics of deer hunting in Missouri. Topics will include equipment, permits and regulations, hunting methods, scouting, stand placement, firearm selection, shot placement, safety, and what to do with your harvest. Ages 10-adult.
