Never paddled a canoe before but always wanted to try? Bring your family and stop by to learn the basic skills necessary to keep afloat while having fun. We will be using our kids’ fishing lake to practice our strokes in a safe environment. This event is come and go as you like. Adult supervision is required for ages 7-17.

Come enjoy a naturalist lead hike at two of Missouri’s beautiful natural areas in honor of National Trails Day! We’ll see waterfalls, unique rock features, and interesting plants along the way. Hike is 3.5 miles and rated moderate. Ages 12-17 with adult supervision. Pick this option if you are following us from the Nature Center or meeting us there. Must dress appropriately for the weather and must wear sturdy shoes. Please bring water, lunch, and any comfort items (insect repellant, hat, binoculars, sunscreen, etc.). Will be canceled if severe weather is in the area.

Spend a couple of hours hiking and testing your nature knowledge to celebrate National Trails Day! Trek our trails and answer nature-related questions along the way. Stop by the nature center between 9-4 to pick up your question sheet and then return to check your answers and claim your prize. Youth and adult groups welcome.

Gar are among the largest and most ancient fish to swim Missouri waters but are wildly misunderstood. Join us to learn about these fascinating fish and how they are managed in Missouri. Participants will learn the basics of bowfishing, make lures specific to gar, learn how to clean these armored fish, and taste something that very few anglers know, just how delicious they are!

Ever wonder what it takes to keep all the nature center reptiles, amphibians, and fish happy? Thanks to some amazing animal care volunteers, they are fed a delicious smorgasbord of crickets, worms, minnows, and more! Drop by to visit with the volunteers and staff as they feed the hungry critters. Youth and adult groups welcome.

Come celebrate the “Year of Fish” with your favorite kid(s). Go fishing in our Kids’ Fishing Pond, try the casting range, learn how to cook and clean fish, make a fishy craft, and see if you can identify some of Missouri’s fish species. Adults can take advantage of Free Fishing Weekend by borrowing a pole and bait to take the entire family fishing at the lake in Cape County Park North.

Have you ever been wade fishing? Look no further, this Father’s Day weekend you can bring your children and come learn about the basics and fun of stream wade fishing.
This program is designed for a parent to be able to go out wade fishing with their children. Parents must register themselves with their children. Participants will be picked up (9 AM) and dropped off (2 PM) at the Cape Girardeau Conservation Nature Center. All equipment provided.

Come with us as we hike along the bluffs and through the forest at Seventy-Six Conservation Area. We’ll get a wonderful view of the river on our 3-mile hike. Hike difficulty is rated as moderate with some steep slopes. Please pack a lunch, bring water, and dress for the weather. Youth ages 12 and older welcome with an adult.

If driving on own, please select that option. Parking may be limited.
Dress for the weather and wear sturdy shoes.

Ever wondered how to use natural items to use as dyes? Deb Cambron from Herbs ‘n Handspun will provide an indigo dye demonstration followed by the creation and use of a dye vat. Participants should bring a 100% cotton T-shirt or any other 100% natural fiber item/fabric to dye.

Deb Cambron from Herbs ‘n Handspun will provide an in-depth presentation on the history of indigo, its use, chemical composition, and dye process. The presentation will be followed with the development of the dye vat and then actually dying items. Participants should bring a 100% cotton T-shirt or any other 100% natural fiber item/fabric to dye.
