Lesson 1: Equipment, Casting and Proper Fish Handling combines instruction with hands-on fishing to teach young anglers and families basic fishing techniques and skills. Participants will learn how to properly and safely cast a spincast fishing rod, parts of a fishing rod, how to fasten basic fishing tackle and how to properly handle and release a fish. Lesson 2: How to Tie a Knot and Bait a Hook combines instruction with hands-on fishing to teach young anglers and families intermediate fishing techniques and skills. Participants will learn to tie an improved clinch knot and how to properly secure bait on hooks. Fishing equipment, instructors/coaches and bait/lures will be provided. Ages 7 and above. All children ages 7-15 must be accompanied by an adult at all times.

Join us as we learn about the French-American ornithologist, naturalist and painter, John James Audubon, and his contributions to natural history. We will then head out on the stroller friendly trails for one of Audubon’s favorite activities, a bird hike of course! Dress for the weather. Bring your binoculars or borrow a pair from us.

This is a great time of year to take your family fishing. We will teach some fishing basics, provide equipment and worms and then let you practice your new fishing skills. Kids who attend will be entered in a drawing at the end of the summer for a new fishing pole and tackle box. Program is presnted at the W. Robert Aylward Educational Pond.

Join 2200-mile Appalachian Trail hiker, Lisa Richter, to discover some great backpacking trails in Missouri! Learn how to carry everything you need for a multi-day trip on your back. Program will include hands-on activities outside, weather permitting.

Gain confidence exploring out on the water as you learn basic canoe and kayak strokes, problem-solving tips, and how to plan your own river trip. Program presented at the W. Blinking and dancing in the evening sky, the magic and beauty of fireflies is breathtaking. Use this evening to learn more about these favorite insects, how you could register your own backyard for Firefly Watch (a fun citizen science program) and make a cool firefly craft. We will then hike into the darkening forest to watch the fireflies appear.
