Do you want lush green gardens without the high-water bills? Well, we have your solution! Using rain barrels can be an easy, inexpensive way to have beautiful native gardens all growing season. During this program you will learn why and how to use a rain barrel. Plus, we will demonstrate how you can make a rain barrel of your very own!

Join us for story hour as we lead you on fantastic nature adventures! We will meet birds, mammals and all sorts of magnificent creatures! We will cross rivers, discover mysteries within the forest and fly across the prairies. Our imaginations are the only limits.

Eww! What’s that smell? Dinner! Come in and learn about one of Missouri’s most overlooked wild animals, the turkey vulture. Using a keen sense of smell, these birds are well adapted to a job that many take for granted.

Global Big Day is an opportunity to observe and share what birds live around you. Your observations help us better understand global bird populations. Join us and be a part of a global citizen science project. Binoculars and smart phone or mobile device is recommended.

This is a great time of year to take your family fishing. We will teach some fishing basics, provide equipment and worms and then let you practice your new fishing skills. Kids who attend will be entered in a drawing at the end of the summer for a new fishing pole and tackle box.

Amphibians are a fun and important group that scientist’s study to determine the health of an ecosystem. Learn how to identify frogs by their calls and create a froggy craft to take home. We will walk to a pond to listen for and maybe even catch a few frogs!

Explore a creek with your little one! We will meet at the Bethany Falls parking lot pavilion and take a short hike to Burr Oak Creek to splash and experience this watery world.
Meet at the Bethany Falls Pavilion, bring bottled water, a towel and a change of clothes if would like to change after the program.

This will be the second Missouri Butterfly Monitoring Network training for the Kansas City area! Learn more about 25 beautiful, common species of butterflies, how surveys are conducted and complete one of the three requirements in order to do surveys. Link to virtual program will be sent by email prior to program.

Lakes and streams are beautiful and are a unique part of the outdoor recreation opportunities in Missouri. Gain confidence exploring out on the water as you learn basic canoe and kayak strokes, problem-solving tips, and how to plan your own river trip. Meet at the W. Robert Aylward Educational Pond.

ORIENTATION:
Required orientation will be presented at Burr Oak Woods W. Robert Aylward Education Pond. MDC will provide canoes, kayaks, paddles and PFD’s.
Attend the required orientation to learn about Missouri river navigation and to brush up on our canoe strokes before we head out on the river. We will prepare you for your upcoming float.
Participants must attend to orientation to participate in the float on Sunday, May 23 5:30-8:30 AM
FLOAT:
It is magic on the river as the sun peeks over the horizon. We will set out in canoes on a 10-mile float trip on the Missouri River from LaBenite Park to Cooley Lake. Please dress for the weather and bring water and a good flashlight. Bring a simple breakfast to enjoy out on the river.
