Let’s kick off this season’s wild edible programs with the basics of plant identification. Learn just what plant taxonomy is and why you should practice it. Weather and plants permitting, this program will include a hike.

Spring has sprung at Burr Oak Woods! Let’s head out on the trails (will be stroller friendly) to explore how creatures great and small wake up when the season changes. From wildflowers blooming to birds singing we are sure to find lots of natural happenings. Dress for the weather. Bring your binoculars or borrow a pair from us.

Visitors to Burr Oak Woods Conservation Nature Center will have the opportunity to select a seedling (short leaf pine or tulip poplar) to plant in celebration of Missouri Arbor Day. One tree per family or group is available while supplies last.

Experience the songs of nature in the spring. Frogs are performing every night here at Burr Oak Woods, join us for an exciting evening of amphibious music. We will learn to identify Missouri frogs by their own unique songs and visit several ponds to enjoy their concerts. Dress to be outside.

“They’ll be blooming around the…forest…when they bloom!” Join a naturalist to enjoy the floral delights of the J. Ernest Dun Jr. Discovery Trail with dutchman’s breeches, may apples, trilliums and more. If inclement weather occurs, enjoy a power-point presentation with some beautiful photos of our native wildflowers.

They have moist skin; no claws and they lay eggs in the water. They’re Amphibians! Frogs, toads and salamanders display wonderful adaptations to living their lives both in and out of the water. Hop in and splash around as we uncover these cold-blooded critters.

Join us as we learn about the French-American ornithologist, naturalist and painter, John James Audubon, and his contributions to natural history.
