Location: Burr Oak Woods Conservation Nature Center

This is a two part clinic:

Join us for a crappie fishing lesson on Thursday evening, April 8th, 6:30 pm - 8:00pm at Burr Oak Woods Nature Center. Where participants will learn how to catch crappie during all seasons and on all conditions. We'll discuss fishing methods, techniques, gear and tackle.

Then we'll meet again on Saturday morning, April 10th, 8:30am - 11:30 am at Jackrabbit Lake, (James A Reed Memorial Wildlife Area) for a hands on opportunity to try and catch some hungry crappie.

Fishing permits are not required for participants to fish during this clinic. Missouri Department of Conservation will provide all equipment, tackle and bait. Each participant must register for this clinic separately. Children must be accompanied by a registered adult at all times during this clinic.

Mushrooms are a delight for animals and people alike! Explore the realm of the fungi and learn what role they play in our environment and which may be a good addition to your dinner plate. We will have a mushroom foray hike in the woods of Burr Oak Woods following the presentation.

Notes: Dress for the weather. Program will be all outdoors, weather permitting. If it is very cold and/or there is more than light rain/sleet/snow program will be cancelled.

Do you want lush green gardens without the high-water bills? Well, we have your solution! Using rain barrels can be an easy, inexpensive way to have beautiful native gardens all growing season. During this program you will learn why and how to use a rain barrel. Plus, we will demonstrate how you can make a rain barrel of your very own!

Eww! What’s that smell? Dinner! Come in and learn about one of Missouri’s most overlooked wild animals, the turkey vulture. Using a keen sense of smell, these birds are well adapted to a job that many take for granted.

Global Big Day is an opportunity to observe and share what birds live around you. Your observations help us better understand global bird populations. Join us and be a part of a global citizen science project. Binoculars and smart phone or mobile device is recommended.

This is a great time of year to take your family fishing. We will teach some fishing basics, provide equipment and worms and then let you practice your new fishing skills. Kids who attend will be entered in a drawing at the end of the summer for a new fishing pole and tackle box.

Amphibians are a fun and important group that scientist’s study to determine the health of an ecosystem. Learn how to identify frogs by their calls and create a froggy craft to take home. We will walk to a pond to listen for and maybe even catch a few frogs!
