What’s with all those little hard capped nuts in our yards? Join us to discover the reasons why Missouri’s oak trees drop so many acorns. These nuts are a staple for many of Missouri’s wild critters.

Project FeederWatch turns your love of feeding birds into scientific discoveries. Join us as we participate in this citizen scientist project. Your bird counts help the Cornell Lab track what is happening in our backyard and helps track long-term trends in bird distribution and abundance. Birders of all ages and skill levels are welcome. Bring your binoculars or borrow a pair of ours.

We’ve all seen and stepped on those little capped nuts, but did you know there is one species that differs from the rest. Burr oak trees produce a unique acorn. Come learn a little more about acorn diversity and how it effects Missouri’s ecosystem.

Missouri trees are relatively easy to identify in the summer when they have all their leaves. As winter approaches these leaves fall off making the trees more difficult to distinguish. Attend this hands-on workshop to learn the tips and tricks to tree identification throughout the seasons.

If you live near trees you have no doubt heard the distinct drumming of a woodpecker. But did you know that woodpeckers play an important role in Missouri’s forest communities? Join us as we peck into the wacky world of Missouri’s woodpeckers. Plus, we will demonstrate how you can make suet to attract woodpeckers to your backyard.

Who’s hopping up that tree, making that sound or eating that birdseed? Find out the answer to these and many more questions as we explore the feathery creatures of our backyards. Weather dependent we will hike down the trail to explore the nearby woods for cool bird species. This program is part of the Blue Springs Let’s Move.
