Come learn about one of Missouri’s most interesting flyers—owls! How can these cool birds find food in the dark? We’ll learn why these lucky owls get to stay up past our bedtimes. It’ll be a hoot!

Location: Riverfront Park

Discover what the river has to offer you! Hands-on activities will teach you the importance of the Mississippi River and surrounding wetlands. This event is fun for the entire family featuring live river animals and free boat rides on the Mississippi. Boat rides take place throughout the day with the last boat leaving around 3:30 pm. This event is located at Riverfront Park depending on river levels. Youth and adult groups welcome.

Date: Monday, September 23, 2019 - 6:00pm to Tuesday, September 24, 2019 - 8:00pm

Location: Apple Creek Conservation Area

This event will be conducted over 2 evenings. The first evening will start from 6 pm to 8:30 pm at the Southeast Regional Office at 2302 County Park Drive. Participants will learn the basics of safety, operation of handguns, shooting stances, types of ammunition, etc. The second evening students will meet at the Apple Creek Conservation Area from
4:30 pm to 8:00 pm for an evening of shooting revolver and semi-automatic handguns. Firearms and ammunition provided at no charge. Students are permitted to bring their own handguns to the range. A minimum of 6 students must be signed up by 9/20 to have this course.

Help us monitor the health of a local stream by conducting a Stream Team survey. Get an up-close look at some of the cool creatures that call stream ecosystems home. We will be wading so please wear clothing and closed-toed shoes that can get wet.

Waste not, want not! Reusing items we already have saves our natural habitat. We will learn how to take an old feed bag and make it into a jazzy tote bag. Machine sewing skills necessary. Please bring your own machine if you have one.

If you want to become an experienced birder, this is your chance. Dr. Allen Gathman will be teaching the basics of bird identification in this workshop. If you want to apply your new knowledge, sign up for the birding hike Saturday morning. Join more experienced birders who can mentor you.

Location: Southeast Regional Office

Free fishing event hosted by Missouri Department of Conservation, Cape Girardeau Police Department, and Fishing League Worldwide. This event will take place at the Cape County Park North Lake. Bring the kids (ages 1-15) out and join us for a fun-filled day where they can learn check out a fishing pole to fish at the lake, shoot archery, and meet some special guests that will be attending the event. There will other activities for the kids to participate in throughout the duration of the event. There will be prizes given away towards the end of the event. Participants must register at the event. Registration begins at 12:00pm. All registered anglers will be provided with a free lunch by the Cape Girardeau Police Department. Food will also be available for purchase.

Registration begins September 1 (ages 15+)
Explore the history of archery in North America from raw material harvest to bow design and performance. Then, using only hand tools and patience, craft your own hickory longbow work of art. Cost for materials is $110. Checks should be made to MCHF and mailed or brought to the Nature Center before the class to complete your registration. Woodworking skills recommended. This program requires stamina and upper arm strength. Lists of references and resources for making future bows on your own will be provided. If you have questions call 573-290-5218.

Come on out to the Cape Nature Center Kid’s Pond and get the chance to learn the basics of catfishing. Participants will learn all about catfish, which includes their basic biology, their habitat, and what kind of bait to use when fishing for them.
All equipment will be provided for the participants to use.

Be right on target! Try your hand at archery and experience a fun way to enjoy the outdoors. All archery equipment will be provided. For ages 9 and up, but adult supervision is required for ages 9-17.

Ever wonder what it takes to keep all the nature center reptiles, amphibians, and fish happy? Thanks to some amazing animal care volunteers, they are fed a delicious smorgasbord of crickets, worms, minnows, and more! Drop by to visit with the volunteers and staff as they feed the hungry critters. Youth and adult groups welcome.

Join us on the nature center lawn to create beautiful works of art using sticks, rocks, flowers, leaves, and other found pieces of nature. We can create our own masterpieces or work together to make one really big, totally spectacular work of genius.

Come howl at the moon as we celebrate all things lunar. A night hike through the forest will reveal how Missouri’s nocturnal creatures prepare themselves for the cooler months ahead. We will end the night with a campfire and treats.

Autumn leaves have some of the most spectacular colors! It is hard to think they could be any prettier. We are going to add just a little bit of paint to make them even more beautiful. We will learn about why fall leaves are so colorful then pick up a paint brush and add some of our own color to some pressed leaves.

Come celebrate the cool fall air at the Nature Center! Warm cider, S’mores, fall games and activities are just the beginning. Come dressed in your costume and walk our Trek N’ Treat Trail to meet some of our night time creature characters. They may seem spooky at first, but once you get to know these animals you’ll see they are just misunderstood and love to give out treats! This event is perfect for all ages.

You must attend both days.
Registration begins October 1 (ages 18+)
Make a beautiful cork decoy to use for waterfowl hunting or as unique art. Learn duck identification, duck ecology and decoy history as you sculpt and paint your own decoy.
Please wear clothes you don’t mind getting dirty or getting paint on. May not be best activity for those with asthma or respiratory difficulties.

Bat wakes up when the sun sets and goes to sleep when it rises. Flap on in to discover how fluttering bats stay busy all night and learn how to be a friend to bats.
