Join us for this basic course about reloading rifle, pistol, and shotgun shell ammunition because you will have great satisfaction breaking targets or shooting bull’s-eyes using your own manufactured rounds. We will cover all aspects of reloading from brass care and preparation to bullet and primer selection and much more.

Learning about nature from a young age is good for kids and for the environment. Every month, join Rockwoods naturalists for an outdoor adventure with your little one. The entire class is presented outside, so please dress for the weather. Siblings are welcome, but please note this class is designed for ages 3–6.

This workshop will include a 3 hour classroom session on prescribed fire methods, equipment, safety, and planning considerations. Weather permitting, a demonstration burn will be conducted afterwards. Lunch will be provided. Come prepared to participate on the burn. Attendees should bring field clothing (cotton or wool; no synthetics), leather boots and gloves, to wear for the demonstration burn. Join us for a free Introduction to Orienteering course!

In the first part of this program, participants will use a provided 3-2-1 Silva Compass to practice dialing in and taking a bearing, sighting an object, pacing their distance and map-reading.

Next, participants will use their skills to complete one of several orienteering courses within the MDC Ozark Regional Office grounds by finding target trees with a special symbol specific to their course to work towards unscrambling a secret message!

The majority of the class will take place outdoors. Participants should be prepared for the weather by wearing appropriate footwear and cold-weather coats. The courses will require hiking up and down a steeper slope through forested areas that may be thick with brush - be prepared to orienteer like a pioneer!

Naturally resilient Missouri native plants are great for home landscaping. They solve common gardening problems and attract a variety of wildlife. Many of them are extremely important to ensure pollinators, like the Monarch Butterfly, survive. Come and learn about what natives might work best in your gardens. We’ll even get you started with some native seedlings to take home with you, just in time for spring planting.

This program will introduce turkey hunting techniques and calling tips for beginners as well as advanced instruction for turkey hunting. We will cover habitat, safety, firearms, different calls, when to call, how often to call, and different types of equipment used to help you have a successful hunt.

We will start in the classroom covering safety, appropriate firearms and ammunition, rules of the game, etiquette on the field, and field lay out. We will then head to the field to test your new skill. Firearm and ammunition will be provided or you may bring your own.

Introduction to 5-Stand/Sporting Clays

This is an introductory course on how to shoot 5-stand. The program will start in the classroom where you will learn safety, stance, etiquette, and technique. Afterwards the program will proceed to live fire on the 5-stand course. Firearms, ammunition, and safety equipment will be provided.

Location: Powder Valley Conservation Nature Center

(Ages 6 and up) Missouri is “just ducky!” The state’s lakes, rivers, ponds, streams and marshes are full of ducks to observe and enjoy. Do ducks migrate? Where are they in the food chain? How do different ducks live? Some ducks “dabble” around near the shore, but others dive deep underwater to find food. Want to learn more? Let’s get down and “ducky” today!

This introduction course to shotguns will start in the Education Center where we will discuss safety, actions, chokes, stance, and how choose and shoot shotguns. Next, we will go to the range for live fire, including some clay target shooting. Not recommended for students under 90 lbs.
