Have you ever wondered how we know where and how secretive animals (like snakes and bats) live and move? Come and join Missouri Department of Conservation Naturalists as well as Dr. Benjamin Jellen (snake biologist) as we uncover the secrets of animal migration through radio telemetry. After a brief indoor presentation, we will all go out and test our skills using receivers and Yagi antennas to find our hidden transmitters.

Stop by anytime to make some simple holiday crafts from natural and recycled materials. We’ll supply the materials, you bring the creativity! Adults and children may participate, adult supervision required. All ages. No registration required.

Archery is a fun, lifetime sport that all can enjoy! Join us anytime between 10am and 2pm as we learn the basics of archery and how to shoot safely, then practice your newly-learned skills under the supervision of Runge staff. All equipment will be provided.

Learn how to identify trees without their leaves! We will look at bark and other features of trees in the winter that can help us identify them. The program will begin with a presentation of the most common trees and how to identify them in the winter. We will then go outside to test our identification skills on the trees in Rockwoods Reservation. Please be dressed for the weather.

Walk-in (all ages) Thinking of making the holidays a little greener this season? Then join us for one of the Discovery Center's favorite holiday traditions. Discover how to decorate using native plants and trees. Fashion a festive holiday swag or wreath to hang using red cedar, prairie grasses, wild nuts, berries, seed pods, game bird feathers and your imagination.

Santa will arrive at 10:30 a.m. Cookies and cocoa will be served while they last. Bring a camera to take a photo with Santa and Mrs. Claus. Trout are catch and release unless child has a trout permit. Fishing for 15 and younger only.

Registration required for each person attending (ages 10+; ages 10–16 must be accompanied by a participating adult)
Put away the smartphones, tablets and GPS receivers to learn to navigate through the woods the old school way…and have some real fun! This program will present the basics of topographic maps, a baseplate compass and how to use both tools to travel from point to point. Bring a water bottle and dress for trekking off trail.

Come see live frogs, toads, and salamanders and learn how their unusual life cycles and beautiful songs make them some of the most unique members of southeast Missouri’s wildlife. Experience the sounds of the night during a moderate hike at the August A. Busch Memorial Conservation Area. We will hike the Busch Hiking/Biking Trail which is approximately 3 ½ miles in length. We may hear coyotes howling, and hear 2 or 3 species of owls calling their mates.

This class covers the basic equipment, materials, and techniques needed to reload ammunition and customize the loads to your firearms. We will demonstrate the process and then give you some hands-on experience reloading ammunition. All equipment and materials are provided.

With Missouri black bear populations on the rise, this month’s Pine Needlers will make this large mammal the focus of the third block of the Ozark themed quilt. This animal has had quite a comeback in recent years and it pays to know as much as possible and be “bear aware” as you enjoy the Missouri outdoors. The Twin Pines staff will help you do just that. This class is designed for ages 16 and up. Attendees under 18 must have a parent or guardian present. Class size limit of 15. Reservations are required. Make reservations on-line at www.mdc.mo.gov/twinpines. For further information, call 573-325-1381.

Learning about nature from a young age is good for kids and for the environment. Every month, join Rockwoods naturalists for an outdoor-themed adventure with your little one. Join us for a special edition of knee-high naturalists where we create nature based gifts for the holiday season. Siblings are welcome, but please note this class is designed for ages 3–6.

The woolly bear caterpillar—also called woolly worm and fuzzy worm—has the reputation of being able to forecast the coming winter weather. Whether this is fact or folklore, join us to learn more about this legendary caterpillar and how to “read” the worm.
