Location: August A Busch Shooting Range

This program is designed for those who have experience with shotguns and want to learn the sport of skeet shooting. We will start in the classroom covering safety, appropriate firearms and ammunition, rules of the game, etiquette on the field, and field lay out. We will then head to the field to test your new skill. Firearm and ammunition will be provided, or you may bring your own.

Beginning Shotgun
April 7 • Tuesday • 6-8 p.m.
(Ages 11 and up, ages 11-16 must be accompanied by an adult)
Reservations begin March 24
This introduction course to shotguns will start in the Education Center where we will discuss safety, actions, chokes, stance, and how choose and shoot shotguns. Next, we will go to the range for live fire, including some clay target shooting. Not recommended for students under 90 lbs.

Ever wonder what it takes to keep all the nature center reptiles, amphibians, and fish happy? Thanks to some amazing animal care volunteers, they are fed a delicious smorgasbord of crickets, worms, minnows, and more! Drop by to visit with the volunteers and staff as they feed the hungry critters. Youth and adult groups welcome.

Join our instructors as we learn the fundamentals of shooting archery. This program begins in the Education Center then moves to the static archery range. This is a fun program for the entire family, ages 9 and up

This clinic gives families an opportunity to learn about the skills necessary to hunt Squirrel. Topics include safety, rules and regulations, hunting methods, hunting techniques, as well as how to care and process for harvested game.

Have you ever been canoeing? This is the perfect chance to learn! We will take our canoes and voyage around Perry County Community Lake, keeping our eyes open for wildlife along the shore. This program is open to adults with children ages 7-11 and we ask that they register as a participant. Please only one adult per child. No experience required for either paddler. Please bring snacks, weather appropriate clothing, and plenty of water to drink.

Visit the lobby this month to enjoy pastel paintings by Jackson artist Vicki Outman. Traveling the rural roads of southeast Missouri and beyond yields an endless source of material for the landscapes, flora and wildlife as subject matter for her paintings. She describes her work as realistic/impressionistic and has exhibited her art throughout the region. Vicki Outman will be demonstrating her artwork on Saturday, April 11, from 1-4 pm.

Attend a “marsh concert” presented by the toads and frogs of Missouri! Join us as we learn how to identify each call from the levees at Marais Temps Clair Conservation Area.

Bring a small flashlight, water, snacks, and dress for the weather.

Directions to the Marais Temps Clair Conservation Area: From intersection of Highway 94 and Highway 370 go North on Highway 94 through the little town of Boschertown. Go-cart track on right. Then go 2 more miles on 94.
Exit onto Highway H, 94 turns to left, you go straight on H. Go 1.8 miles on H and Turn left onto Island Road
Go 1.8 miles on Island Road and turn right into Marais Temps Clair parking lot

Location: August A Busch Shooting Range

This program is for individuals interest in learning how to shoot a handgun and includes basic handgun fundamentals, operation, safety, maintenance, and safe storage. We start with classroom instruction then move to the range for a live-fire session. Firearms, ammunition, and safety equipment will be provided.

We all know that beavers eat trees, but we can use them to help flavor and preserve our food. Learn fun and easy ways to use our native plants to enhance your meals and compare how different woods provide varying flavors. This tasty program is part of our ongoing “Year of the Tree” celebration. Bring weather appropriate clothing, as portions of the class will be outdoors.

Let’s step outside to listen to the songs of frogs and toads as they welcome Spring. Discover the unique life cycle of amphibians, become a member of our “frog band”; take a walk to hear the amazing chorus of the ponds; and learn to identify several species by their distinct sounds. Dress for the weather.

Join us to discover the joys of shotgun shooting. We will discuss shotgun nomenclature, stance, dominant eye, mounting, moving the shotgun, and much more. You may use our shotguns or plan to use your own. Please make sure your shotgun is completely unloaded before arriving.

Southeast Missouri is crisscrossed by highways, but one route sees more travelers than any other, the Mississippi Flyway. This superhighway is a migration route and brings countless migratory birds right through our region. This program will offer participants a chance to see some of these migrants, including colorful warblers and water birds, up close and silently from the surface of the water. Transportation, kayaks, instruction, and safety equipment will be provided. Meet at the nature center, and bring weather appropriate clothing, a water bottle, and sack lunch.

Join a nature center volunteer for a walk at Trail of Tears State Park to see wildflowers blooming at this unique area. Dress appropriately for the weather and wear sturdy hiking shoes. Bring water, a snack, sunscreen, (camera and binoculars optional). Held rain or shine. If canceled due to severe weather, participants will be notified 1 hour prior to leaving. Call 573-290-5218 to meeting spot and time.
