Join 2,200-mile Appalachian Trail hiker, Lisa Richter, to discover some great backpacking trails in Missouri! Learn how to carry everything you need for a multi-day trip on your back. Program will include hands-on activities outside, weather permitting.

Walk-in (all ages) Learn how to light up a dreary winter night with a homemade ice globe. We will use various molds like buckets and balloons combined with natural objects like leaves and pinecones to create beautiful winter luminaries to brighten our nighttime winter landscape.

The fish-filled streams of southwest Missouri are a winter home to bald eagles. Join the Missouri Master Naturalists, the community of Stella, and local MDC staff for an eagle viewing opportunity at Stella Veteran’s Memorial Park. There will be spotting scopes set up and fun educational activities throughout the day. Stop by anytime.

From the chuck wagon to the campfire, come learn fun ways to prepare great meals outside. Get hands-on with Dutch ovens, foil packets, and other ways to cook without a microwave. All participants will get to sample their work! Portions of the program will be outdoors, so please dress for weather.

Members of the Missouri Trout Fishermen’s Association will be on hand to demonstrate basic fly-tying techniques. Stop by anytime and learn how combinations of feathers, yarn, and thread can imitate insects or other food that will fool a fish. All ages. No registration required. Fish, forests and wildlife are important resources in Missouri. Walk-in anytime to learn about these resources and create some cool wearable art on fabric you bring or use paper provided. Every half hour, join the naturalist for a hike to look for tracks and signs of winter wildlife (as weather allows).

Location: Ammo Alley

Women’s Basic Handgun Workshop. Women will learn handgun parts and operation, ammunition, handgun safety, and shooting fundamentals. Workshop will include shooting at a climate controlled indoor shooting range. Participants will receive classroom training and one-on-one shooting instruction. This workshop and classroom instruction is offered free of charge. There will be a range fee of $10 per participant paid directly to Ammo Alley. Handguns and ammunition will be provided by the MDC. Participants are welcome to bring their own unloaded, cased handguns but will be required to provide their own new factory ammunition (no reloads). This workshop is open to women ages 14 and over. Girls age 14 to 17 may attend with a parent or guardian who is also registered for the workshop.

Introduction to Firearms

Reservations begin January 14
If you are not familiar or comfortable with firearms, this is an educational introduction to firearms. Join our staff as we look at various types of firearms including rifles, shotguns and handguns. We will examine the various types of actions and provide a hands-on demonstration of their working mechanisms. The presentation will include basic safety, home security, and general maintenance. (Ages 7 and up) Looking at a skeleton can give you a key to the animal’s life. Did it swim, fly, walk, or slither? Did it eat plants, meat, or both? “Key out” a mystery mammal skull in our special question-and-answer maze.
