Walk-in (all ages) Have you ever found an animal skull or bone while hiking in the woods? There is a lot to learn about an animal by examining its skull or beak. Learn how to tell what an animals eats, where they live and are they predator or prey by examining some basic features of its skull.

We'll clean some trout, then we'll also prepare them for everyone to sample using some favorite and delicious methods.

Join in on a walk through the trails to kick off the New Year! We will be meeting at the RUTH & PAUL HENNING CONSERVATION AREA at 10am. Please wear weather appropriate attire and hiking shoes. Bring your water bottle and hiking gear. Light refreshments will be provided. Registration is required.
Ruth and Paul Henning Conservation Area is located on the west side of Branson. Take Highway 76 west, 0.75 mile from the Highway 376/Highway 76 intersection.

Ever wonder what it takes to keep all the nature center reptiles, amphibians, and fish happy? Thanks to some amazing animal care volunteers, they are fed a delicious smorgasbord of crickets, worms, minnows, and more! Drop by to visit with the volunteers and staff as they feed the hungry critters. Youth and adult groups welcome.

Who’s that hooting it up each January evening?? Owls that’s who. You will learn what makes them such effective night time hunters and why they hoot so much this time of year. Then we will go outside and see if we can entice any owls to fly in and talk to us. Be prepared to spend the second part of the class outside.

Start the new year off right by catching some winter trout!

Start the morning off with a trout fishing lesson in the class room at the Kansas City Regional Conservation Office where we'll learn how to catch and clean trout. Then we'll head down to Honker Pond to try our luck catching some hungry trout.

Dress for the weather but if you get cold while you are fishing you can take a break to warm up by the fire and enjoy some hot chocolate.

Only children can fish at Honker Pond but parents and family are welcome to attend.

Missouri Department of Conservation will provide all of the equipment, bait, fishing coaches, hot chocolate and a warm fire.

Children do not need a trout permit to fish at this event as long as they plan to release their fish, if they would like to keep the trout that they catch they will need a trout permit.

All children must be accompanied by an adult.

If bad weather is forcast the day of this event it may be postponed. You will be contacted if any changes are necessary.

Break out of your cabin fever and discover a winter wildlife haven, Dresser Island! We will hike 6.5 miles (with an option for 3.5 miles) along the Mississippi River in search of a variety of wildlife including eagles, pelicans, waterfowl, muskrats, deer, and many others.

Location: Mingo National Wildlife Refuge Visitor Center

Winter birds and waterfowl are abundant at Mingo. We are going down to see how many we can spot in one day. We will be in and out of the van at several spots. Please dress according to the weather and wear good shoes. Bring a refillable water bottle and snack if you wish.

Kids, enjoy a morning just for you and the birds. Discover the excitement of bird watching in the tradition of the annual Christmas Bird Count. Experienced birders from the Ozark Gateway Audubon Society Chapter and local staff will lead mentored birding experiences. Remember to bring binoculars (if you have any), dress for the weather, and be prepared for an easy- to moderate-rated hike.

Location: Burr Oak Woods Conservation Nature Center

Missouri River Bird Observatory staff and Burr Oak Woods partner in an on-going project to identify and track the birds that come to our feeders each winter. From the resident chickadees and cardinals to the migrating juncos and sparrows, we capture, apply colored bands and release these fascinating creatures. Once banded and recorded, you will be able to track individual birds through this and future seasons. This program is weather permitting.
