In-person MDC events and programs at our nature centers, shooting ranges, and other locations around the state are limited due to COVID-19 considerations. MDC is offering new online programs that allow people to attend virtually. Please check our class listings to see what classes are limited, in-person classes or virtual classes.

Location: Runge Conservation Nature Center

Put on your hiking shoes and travel to Lake of the Ozarks State Park to join a guided hike along the Honey Run Trail. Trail: 4.2 miles; easy to moderate. Meet at the Runge Nature Center and follow our hike leaders to the location or meet at the trailhead. It's about an hour drive from Jefferson City. Hike leaders will contact participants before the hike to give directions if needed. Wear sturdy shoes, dress for the weather, bring a water bottle, and pack a lunch/snack. Masks are required. Registration required. Ages 18 and up.

Nature enjoys the season of gift giving as well! Join Naturalists every Wednesday until Christmas for a weekly DIY nature-based decoration for your yard or home. The series will include pinecone decorations (12/2), wildlife garland (12/9) driftwood centerpieces (12/16), and cookie- cutter birdseed feeders (12/23).

Fire building with flint steel and tomahawk throwing are primitive skills that connect us to an earlier time. Join us to learn first-hand how these tools have been used over the ages and practice in our outdoor range. The outdoor range at Runge is not ADA accessible.

Tasting harvested wild game is one of the most rewarding experiences from your hunt. Join this virtual program to learn how to prepare two dishes, seared duck breast and venison roast, with Runge Naturalist Karli Dawson. Registration Required. All Ages. Participants will be sent a link from the presenter the day of the program.

Ever wonder what it takes to keep all the nature center reptiles, amphibians, and fish happy? Thanks to some amazing animal care volunteers, they are fed a delicious smorgasbord of crickets, worms, minnows, and more! Meet a few of our captive critters and observe them eating during this live, virtual program. (all ages)

The hush of winter has fallen over Missouri. Nature’s pace has slowed but there are still mysteries to explore. Join us for a few 30- minute virtual programs hosted by our Runge Naturalists, each exploring the wonders of winter! *Registration Required. All Ages.

Date: Friday, December 18, 2020 - 10:00am to 11:00am

Location: Tower Grove Park-Stupp Center

On the first day of winter nature gave to me…a cardinal in an oak tree! Discover the joy of nature’s gifts as we practice counting in our own “12 Days of Winter” song. We’ll also read a winter story. Explore how animals live in Missouri and make a craft to remember the wonders winter brings us! Meet the naturalist at the Stupp Center.

While the plan is to have this program outside, it will be moved indoors if there is inclement weather. Participants will be notified prior if it is moved indoors.

For the safety of participants and our staff, MDC asks all guests observe social distancing guidelines and maintain at least 6 feet from others. Bringing and wearing face coverings is encouraged when indoors, or any time visitors are unable to maintain at least 6 feet from others. Local ordinances requiring face masks will be observed where applicable.

Location: Runge Conservation Nature Center

This month we stay close to home at Binder Park in Jefferson City. There are 15 miles of trails at Binder and we will hike one or two of them. Trail: Easy to Moderate; 4-5 miles. Dress for the weather, wear sturdy shoes, pack a lunch/snack, and bring a water bottle. We will not be carpooling in Runge vans, but ask that you meet at Runge to follow the hiking leaders to Binder or meet at the trailhead. Information on where to meet at Binder Park will be e-mailed to participants before the hike. Masks are required for this program. Registration Required. Ages 18 and up.

Location: Lake City Shooting Range

This class covers the basic equipment, materials, and techniques needed to reload ammunition and customize the loads to your firearms. We will demonstrate the process and then give you some hands-on experience reloading ammunition. All equipment and materials are provided.

Online Virtual Program: Are your children interested in shooting, but you need help getting started? Air rifle is one of the safest ways to start the youth off in shooting safely. We will cover the basic safety of a firearm, fundamentals of shooting and other youth programs available. This will be a fun and safe way for children and their parents to learn and enjoy shooting together.

Winter seems to be a time when wild animals either hibernate or head south but there are quite a few who are winter warriors! Adapting to the environment is just one of the many ways animals seem to thrive in the sometimes-harsh conditions of the Missouri winters. Join us in an exploration of how some animals not only survive in the chilly winter but thrive.

Tri-Lakes Fishing Primer- How to Start Fishing Missouri's White River Lakes!
This virtual program will offer tips on how to fish Missouri’s White River Lakes – Table Rock Lake, Lake Taneycomo and Bull Shoals Lake – and will also provide some history of these well-known reservoirs. You’ll learn what species of sportfish live in them, along with some basic fishing techniques. Regulations for each lake will also be covered. This workshop will be great for a beginner and a good reminder for the seasoned Ozarks’ angler. This program will be given through WebEx, so please register with a valid email address. Many animals are often seldom seen; however, their signs are everywhere! Join us as we explore various animal sign identification techniques including scat identification, skull identification, and track identification. We will also take a hike to see if we can spot some evidence of wildlife ourselves.

Want to learn the basics of archery and how to shoot safely? Join us and you’ll be hitting the bullseye in no time! Meet at the Runge outdoor pavilion. Dress for the weather with closed-toed shoes and non-baggy clothing. The Runge archery range is not ADA accessible. Love to shoot, but already attended this basic course? Keep an eye out for more options at mdc.mo.gov/centralevents.

So, you’ve had a successful hunt? Now what? Often, we go to the same old recipes for our harvest, why not learn something new? This virtual program will provide you several recipes to try for the holidays using your wild game. All recipes will be provided so you can impress your friends and family around the celebration table this year.

Location: Parma Woods Shooting Range

Winter is a great time to get outside and view Missouri's birds in the wild! Minimal leaf cover allows for better viewing of our resident species as they flutter among the forest. Join us at the Parkville Nature Sanctuary/White Alloe Creek CA for a casual cold-season hike through a section of mature timber to see what kinds of birds can be found and hopefully learn a thing or two about our aviary residents in the process. Binoculars will help us get a better look at the birds we find. Please bring your own if possible. In addition, dress appropriately for the weather. This program will take place entirely outdoors.

Let’s close out the year with a big hurrah for Your Big Year! Join us virtually as we celebrate the birds seen throughout 2020. At the start of the year we initiated a year-long challenge to see and learn about more birds. Many people joined us and began birdwatching. Join us for a short program followed by a live Q&A. If you participated in Your Big Year and have attended at least three bird related programs OR have tracked at least 25 bird species this year, email Jordanya.Raos@mdc.mo.gov to have your name entered in the end-of-the-year drawing. This program counts as one of the three programs and you have until December 31st to submit your entry. When registering, please provide an active email address in your profile as you will receive a link one day prior to the program. Recommended for all ages.
