Would you like to improve your wing shooting skills using non-toxic shot? Join us in learning the proper way to select the best ammunition and choke combination for different migratory and upland game bird hunting. We will also discuss how to judge distances and properly pattern your shotgun. Firearms, ammunition, and safety equipment will be provided however you are encouraged to bring your own shotgun and chokes if they are approved for use with nontoxic shot. Learning about nature from a young age is good for kids and for the environment. Every month, join Rockwoods naturalists for an outdoor adventure with your little one. The entire class is presented outside, so please dress to be in the water, wear sunscreen, and bring bug spray. Siblings are welcome, but please note this class is designed for ages 3–6.

The alligator gar is called the “king” of fish. He is a wonder to behold. Not only does he have impressive teeth but scales that are like chain mail. Historically, the scales have been used for arrow heads, tools, and jewelry. We will learn some amazing facts about this “monster” and use their scales in a couple of projects. Program is free.

Lesson 1: Equipment, Casting and Proper Fish Handling combines instruction with hands-on fishing to teach young anglers and families basic fishing techniques and skills. Participants will learn how to properly and safely cast a spincast fishing pole, parts of a fishing pole, how to fasten basic fishing tackle and how to properly handle and release a fish. Participants are limited to anglers ages 7 – 15 and families with children. Fishing equipment, instructors/coaches and bait/lures will be provided. Adults who do not wish to fish must accompany their child(ren) at all times. Lesson 2: How to Tie a Knot and Bait a Hook combines instruction with hands-on fishing to teach young anglers and families intermediate fishing techniques and skills. Participants will learn to tie an improved clinch knot and how to properly secure a variety of baits to various types of hooks. Participants are limited to anglers ages 7 – 15 and families with children. Fishing equipment, instructors/coaches and bait/lures will be provided. Adults who do not wish to fish must accompany their child(ren) at all times. Hunting doves is a great way to spend time in nature. Actually bagging a few doves is the challenging part. This 3-evening clinic is designed to work through some of the common barriers to dove hunting success. There will be a fair amount of shooting in this workshop so feel free to bring your own shotgun or use ours.

Lesson 4: Fishing with Lures and Fishing Regulations combines instruction with hands-on fishing to teach young anglers and families how to properly select a fishing lure based on desired fish species, weather and water conditions. In addition, participants will learn how to identify and understand fishing regulations. Fishing equipment, instructors/coaches and bait/lures will be provided. All children ages 7-15 must be accompanied by an adult at all times. Participants must have completed Lessons 1 and 2 prior to attending Lesson 3 or 4.

This program is for women only. Enjoy trout fishing and a fish fry at Roaring River State Park and Conservation Area. We will fish in our own privately stocked trout pool in the morning and then learn how to clean and fry trout for lunch. Make plans to join us for a great outdoor experience. Register and meet at the Nature Center. Transportation will be provided. Ages 12-adult. Girls 12-17 must be accompanied by an adult female. Learn what you need to know before you head out to the field to hunt doves. Sharpen your shooting skills before you hunt to increase your success. An adult guardian is required to attend with the youth. More information will be sent upon acceptance of registration. Minimum class size is 6. Student will be notified on the 26th if the class does not meet minimum requirement.

Meet at the nature center and drive to Onondaga Cave State Park in Crawford County. We will hike Deer Run trail in the morning and then cool down with a tour of beautiful Onondaga Cave (there will be a small fee for the cave tour). Bring your lunch, water, and bug repellent. Trail: Easy, 2.5 miles.

Participants will learn the different components of fish anatomy and their functions. In addition, participants will learn about various types of fish habitat and aquatic food webs. Participants are limited to anglers ages 7 – 15 and families with children. Fishing equipment, instructors/coaches and bait/lures will be provided. Join us on this treasure hunt for creatures with 2 pairs of wings and discover their secret lives, why they are important, and how to classify them in order to help identify them. We will meet at the pavilion by the Visitor Center to start with an introductory discussion. We will then drive our cars to a couple of different locations to observe damselflies and dragonflies. Dress for the weather. We will be walking on uneven terrain by lakes. Make sure you bring sunblock, bug spray, and a water bottle, (sunglasses, hat with brim, and binoculars optional).
