Trail Treks! New Year’s Hike at Forest 44 Conservation Area

Have you ever seen a stream disappear? Join MDC naturalists to discover this and other wonders at Forest 44 Conservation Area in St. Louis County. As we hike the 2.5-mile Dogwood Ridge Trail, we will explore the fascinating cultural and natural history of the area. Directions: Near the intersection of I-44 and Highway 141, take Meramec Station Road west 1 mile, then left on Hillsboro Road 1/2 mile to the area entrance. We will meet in the parking lot. Questions? Call Powder Valley Conservation Nature Center at 314-301-1500. Dress for the weather, wear sturdy shoes, and bring a water bottle. Directions and more information will be emailed to participants upon registration.

Come to the Traditional Fly Tying Class and learn how to make dozens of different traditional flies. The instructors have over 50 years of experience between them, and there's only 2 of them. This is a family class so feel free to invite friends and family to join you. Registration is required.

Come discover how Missouri Master Naturalists mix science with service. This orientation meeting is for individuals interested in joining the local conservation service chapter. Members volunteer at public events, conduct education demonstrations, participate in field trips and citizen science projects, and hold social events tied to a shared love of nature.

Predator hunting can be done at times of the year when other hunting seasons are closed. This introductory program will cover the basics of predator hunting and trapping. We will cover equipment needed, set-ups, and calling. Both basic as well as some advanced tactics will be covered.

Missouri is a winter home to many kinds of waterfowl. Find out how and why some ducks and geese migrate and learn how to identify them by sight and sound. Then become a scientist and discover how the right mix of feathers and oil help them to survive even the coldest winter.

What better way to enjoy nature’s bounty than to use Dutch oven cooking. Learn the techniques of this cooking style from Sara Bradshaw and enjoy the results of your work at the end of class. This program is designed for ages 16 and up. Attendees under 18 must have a parent or guardian present. Class size limit of 12. Reservations are required. Game of Homes: Winter is coming!
Thursday 6 p.m. – 8 p.m.
(Adults) Winter is coming and wildlife are looking for new homes to stay warm. Are they planning on taking yours over? Don’t lose the battle! This program will offer tips and suggestions for homeowners on how to keep or stop nuisance wildlife from entering your house and the common entry points they use. Learn about the different types of wildlife that commonly cause problems and what you can do to keep wildlife in the wild. (Reservations begin December 8th).

With sightings of eagles on the rise in the area, Twin Pines is hosting a program to increase your knowledge of these magnificent birds. The Dickerson Park Zoo will be bringing both a Bald and Golden eagle to give attendees a closer look, answer questions and provide fun facts. This program is for school children ages 5 to 13. In this program, we’ll become bear aware by learning about bear ecology and how our actions can prevent bears for becoming a nuisance. We’ll conclude by doing a paint pour on a wooden bear cutout. You’ll leave with a beautiful piece of art that you’ve created. Children under 16 must have an adult present. No painting experience required. Paint pouring can be messy. Wearing old clothes is recommended.

Full Moon Hike

Celebrate the first full moon of 2020 as we hike through Kennedy Forest. From sight to sound, touch to taste, your senses will come alive with all there is to explore despite the silence of winter. This rare, urban forest, is a well-kept secret, home to several nocturnal animals. Please dress warm and wear comfortable shoes as we embark on this leisure hike. Program meets outdoors at the John F. Kennedy Pavilion in Forest Park.

Dutch oven baking with coals is a fun way to connect with the past. Come join us as we take on homemade Dutch oven bread. We will make several styles of bread and learn the tricks of the trade to make wonderful homemade loaves. Part of the program will be outdoors, so please bring weather appropriate clothing.

Interested in hunting but need help getting started? We will be hosting a series of programs throughout 2020 to introduce people to the heritage sport of hunting. In this program we will answer the question of what is hunting along with what kind of social, time, and financial commitment an individual has to be ready to make to begin hunting safely. Start off your New Year’s resolution to get fit on a hike with Rockwoods Naturalists! Hike 7.8 miles of intense hills on the Green Rock Trail in Rockwoods Reservation! You can also improve your mental health from spending time outdoors in nature. We will be hiking from the welcome center at Rockwoods Reservation to the property boundary next to Greensfelder County Park and back. Please be dressed for the weather and ready to sweat!

From the chuck wagon to the campfire, come learn fun ways to prepare great meals outside. Get hands-on with Dutch ovens, foil packets, and other ways to cook without a microwave. All participants will get to sample their work! Portions of the program will be outdoors, so please dress for weather.

Expand your skills beyond leaf identification and discover what other features may be used to identify tree species native to Missouri. Test your skills and learn forestry tidbits in this fun, interactive hike. This hike will take place outside on Ridgetop Trail behind the Nature Center, so please dress accordingly. Youth and adult groups welcome, though this walk is limited to 25 participants.
