Nature enjoys the season of gift giving as well! Join Naturalists every Wednesday until Christmas for a weekly DIY nature-based decoration for your yard or home. The series will include pinecone decorations (12/2), wildlife garland (12/9) driftwood centerpieces (12/16), and cookie- cutter birdseed feeders (12/23).

Grab your favorite blanket and snuggle up to watch and listen to some winter stories geared for the little ones, but enjoyed by all ages. Enjoy a fun, winter scavenger hunt while walking the trails at the Springfield Conservation Nature Center. A station will be set up on the sidewalk at the Nature Center entrance with everything you need for this self-guided activity. Dress for the weather and plan to spend 1-2 hours to complete the scavenger hunt and receive a small prize. Please remember to social distance and wear a mask when social distancing is not possible. Recommended for all ages.

Join us for our regular virtual program series where you can ask the naturalist questions about nature topics. Learn about barred owls, their coloration, vocalizations, and behavior with Naturalist Alan Reed followed by a live Q&A session. Join us for some bird watching at nearby Binder Lake in Jefferson City. Different species of waterfowl and occasionally a Bald Eagle or two make appearances throughout the winter months. Binoculars and scopes will be provided. Masks are required for this program. Meet at the boat ramp access at Binder Lake. *Registration Required. All Ages.

Nature gives us so many gifts! Join us to put them to use and create natural holiday decorations. This program will take place outside so please dress for the weather. No more than one adult with each registered participant. Additional siblings or unregistered participants will not be able to attend. *Registration Required. Ages 3-6 years.

Let's explore! We may not always see wildlife at Runge, but we animals are around by the tracks, nests, and other things they create or leave behind. What will we find? Registration Required. All Ages. Everyone attending MUST register. Masks are required for this program.

Date: Tuesday, January 5, 2021 - 6:00pm to 8:30pm

Location: Ammo Alley

Women’s Basic Handgun Workshop. Women will learn handgun parts and operation, ammunition, handgun safety, and shooting fundamentals. Workshop will include shooting at a climate controlled indoor shooting range. Participants will receive classroom training and one-on-one shooting instruction. This workshop and classroom instruction is offered free of charge. There will be a range fee of $10 per participant paid directly to Ammo Alley. Handguns and ammunition will be provided by the MDC. Participants are welcome to bring their own unloaded, cased handguns but will be required to provide their own new factory ammunition (no reloads). This workshop is open to women ages 14 and over. Girls age 14 to 17 may attend with a parent or guardian who is also registered for the workshop.

Date: Thursday, January 7, 2021 - 6:00pm to Thursday, February 4, 2021 - 8:00pm

Location: Virtual

Objectives: Students will learn a variety of techniques for the art of fly tying. Students will make flies that catch fish as well as look good.

Format: A typical class will consist of 2 hours of classroom work per night. Students may bring note taking materials if desired. Room will be open one half hour prior to class if anyone needs extra practice or has questions. This class will have the "In Classroom" session socially distanced, and there will be another session to run concurrently as an Online Virtual class for people who want to stay home, or are too far away to attend in person.

Required: You must pre-register by going to our website and register under the events tab, before December 30th, 2020. If you have a set of fly tying tools please indicate that with your registration (tools are not required for the live class, but they are required for the virtual class). All classes are structured to add knowledge by session. If you miss a class you will need to catch up before the next class. Things we learn later in the class will utilize acquired knowledge from previous classes.

To be successful: Each virtual participant must acquire their own tools. The materials will be sent to you once a week, a week ahead of time, to the mailing address you provide in registration. The tools you will need: Common Vice, thread bobbin, black tying thread 140, and 210 Denier (2/0 and 6/0), bobbin threader, "Dr. Slick Rotary whip finisher, or Cabela’s brand (the kind that freely spins in the handle), hair packer, hair stacker, dubbing brush, fly tying scissors, tying wax, hackle pliers, and bodkin. Optional additions: head cement, multiple bobbins, other colors of thread (red, white, and tan) a wine cork for displaying tied flies, small block of wood with 1/8, -1/4 inch holes drilled in it for tool storage, cheap magnet for organizing hooks, extra scissors, small wire cutters, and small tackle box for storage.
