Wildlife Tracking with Radio Telemetry

Have you ever wondered how we know where and how secretive animals (like snakes and bats) live and move? Come and join Missouri Department of Conservation Naturalists as well as Dr. Benjamin Jellen (snake biologist) as we uncover the secrets of animal migration through radio telemetry. After a brief indoor presentation, we will all go out and test our skills using receivers and Yagi antennas to find our hidden transmitters.

On the first day of winter nature gave to me…a cardinal in an oak tree! Come and celebrate nature’s winter animals as we practice counting in our own “12 days of winter” song. We’ll also read a winter story and make a gift to give back to nature!

Trail Treks! New Year’s Hike at Forest 44 Conservation Area

Have you ever seen a stream disappear? Join MDC naturalists to discover this and other wonders at Forest 44 Conservation Area in St. Louis County. As we hike the 2.5-mile Dogwood Ridge Trail, we will explore the fascinating cultural and natural history of the area. Directions: Near the intersection of I-44 and Highway 141, take Meramec Station Road west 1 mile, then left on Hillsboro Road 1/2 mile to the area entrance. We will meet in the parking lot. Questions? Call Powder Valley Conservation Nature Center at 314-301-1500. Dress for the weather, wear sturdy shoes, and bring a water bottle. Directions and more information will be emailed to participants upon registration.

A conservation crime has been committed! Uncover the mystery by engaging in scientific investigations to determine what really happened. Discover how conservation agents and biologists use evidence to solve crimes against nature with hands-on investigations and lab tests.

Put your needlepoint skills to good use and create a quilt featuring Missouri’s state symbols! Each month, we will learn about a state symbol and create a corresponding quilt block. January will feature the bluebird as our first quilt square. Please bring your own embroidery needle and bring a hoop if desired. For questions, contact Powder Valley at 314-301-1506 .

(Ages 7 and up) Looking at a skeleton can give you a key to the animal’s life. Did it swim, fly, walk or slither? Did it eat plants, meat or both? “Key out” a mystery mammal skull in our special question-and-answer maze.
Please register only children or adults coming for themselves, not those bringing children. For help with registration, please call 314-301-1500.

Reservations are required and begin immediately.
This is a fun evening for all ages. Join us as we welcome back the Missouri falconers and their hunting partners! Falconry, a sport reported as early as 700 B.C.E. is still practiced today. Learn what falconry is and how to become a falconer. The evening will begin in the auditorium with a presentation on raptors and the art of falconry. Following the presentation, you will have an opportunity to “meet and greet” the birds and their hunting partners, and see some of the equipment used in the sport of falconry. Be sure to bring your cameras.
