Registration required for each person attending (ages 10+; ages 10–16 must be accompanied by a participating adult)
Put away the smartphones, tablets and GPS receivers to learn to navigate through the woods the old school way…and have some real fun! This program will present the basics of topographic maps, a baseplate compass and how to use both tools to travel from point to point. Bring a water bottle and dress for trekking off trail.

Join us for story hour as we lead you on fantastic nature adventures! We will meet birds, mammals and all sorts of magnificent creatures! We will cross rivers, discover mysteries within the forest and fly across the prairies. Our imaginations are the only limits.

Missouri River Bird Observatory staff and Burr Oak Woods partner in an on-going project to identify and track the birds that come to our feeders each winter. From the resident chickadees and cardinals to the migrating juncos and sparrows, we capture, apply colored bands and release these fascinating creatures. Once banded and recorded, you will be able to track individual birds through this and future seasons. This program is weather permitting.

Missouri is a winter home to many kinds of waterfowl. Find out how and why some ducks and geese migrate and learn how to identify them by sight and sound. Then become a scientist and discover how the right mix of feathers and oil help them to survive even the coldest winter.

Prescribed burning is just as it sounds, a prescription of fire to the land to create positive change. There are many reasons why fire is an important and necessary tool to keep habitat healthy. Come learn more about how fire is used, manipulated and controlled for a variety of purposes.

They can dig, climb and even fly. They are Missouri’s mammals. This furry group of animals share unique characteristics that set them apart from all other animals. Join us as we celebrate all that is special about mammals.

Join 2,200-mile Appalachian Trail hiker, Lisa Richter, to discover some great backpacking trails in Missouri! Learn how to carry everything you need for a multi-day trip on your back. Program will include hands-on activities outside, weather permitting.

Fish, forests and wildlife are important resources in Missouri. Walk-in anytime to learn about these resources and create some cool wearable art on fabric you bring or use paper provided. Every half hour, join the naturalist for a hike to look for tracks and signs of winter wildlife (as weather allows).
