Walk-in (all ages) Kissing a frog won't turn them into a prince and touching a toad won't give you warts! Frogs and toads are our most common amphibians and are fascinating creatures. Let's learn about all the different species in Missouri, then go out to the pond to see if we can find some.

Walk-in (all ages) Insects are beneficial and an amazing part of the natural world. Grab a net and discover the insects that call the Discovery Center home. You will learn identification tips and even discover if any insects are edible! There will be activities for all ages to enjoy and the opportunity to post your insect discovery on our iNaturalist page.

Walk-in (all ages) The art exhibit of Mary Ann Foster, MDC volunteer, will be on display the last half of August and all of September. This is your chance to meet her in person. Her work displays the beauty of nature in mixed media of all kinds. "My art work is seeing and depicting nature in Missouri. As sitting in a field of thistles at Nell Lake and watching the gold finch feed on the thistles." As a former art teacher Mary Ann's work includes very detailed drawings of sunflowers, succulent spring plants and impressionistic paintings in acrylics or watercolor. Make plans to visit with Mary Ann Foster and learn how she brings nature alive through art.

Let's start by learning to use iNaturalist and Monarch SOS. We will blend technology and our natural habitats to learn how to record encounters with wildlife, connect to specialist in the science world and help gather wildlife data we can share. iPhones, iPads, Android phones or tablets are recommended.

Registration required (adults): register by contacting John Haynes, (913) 742-0100 or jhaynes5018@everestkc.net. This course consists of two days of classroom instruction at the Discovery Center on September 14 & October 5, a shakedown exercise at Shawnee Mission Park on October 13 from 1-4:30 p.m. and a backpacking trip to a MO Wilderness Area October 25-27. Classroom sessions cover: equipment, trip planning, food/preparation and more. In the shakedown exercise participants will do a short hike both on and off-trail with their loaded backpack and set up their campsite. Sierra Club has a Lending Gear Library for any equipment a student needs.

Registration required (4th and 5th graders) Youth will explore nature on the Discovery Center campus and in nearby neighborhoods, take nature field trips and meet neighborhood leaders and career professionals creating healthy places for nature and people. This program is a partner program hosted by GreenWorks in Kansas City and the Discovery Center. Registration is required at https://www.greenworkskc.org/ECOS or 816-490-6434.

Like to paint? Like to be outdoors? Consider signing up for the 8th Annual Brush Creek Art Walk, a "Plein Air" painting competition which runs September 13-15. Join some of the region's best artists as they compete along the entire four mile stretch of Brush Creek Parkway; a nearly continuous trail of lush tree lined walks, fountains, sculptures and parks, including the Discovery Center. On Sat., Sept. 14 registered artists will participate in a three hour quick paint competition on the Discovery Center grounds starting at 10 a.m. Whether you are a painter, like to watch artists create or just like to admire artwork at the Discovery Center, the Brush Creek Art Walk has an opportunity for you. Walk-in (all ages) Understanding the ins and outs to selecting and maintaining fishing gear does not have to be intimidating. This program will cover how to pick the right rod and reel for what you plan to do, how to use them and how to take care of them. There will be hands on portions related to spooling line, care and maintenance and casting.

Walk-in (all ages) The Missouri Prairie Foundation will be on site for Monarch Mania to offer a native plant sale providing a variety of native seeds, flowers, grasses, shrubs and trees to purchase. If you wish to preorder your choices for pick-up visit https://moprairie.org for specific vendor information. A percentage of proceeds from plant sales will benefit prairie conservation in Missouri.

Walk-in (all ages) The monarch is without a doubt one of the most remarkable insects we have the opportunity to enjoy in Missouri. Discover the majesty of this butterfly through various hands-on activities that will leave you in a state of "Monarch Mania." There will be monarchs to tag and release, milkweed giveaways and much more for all ages. Join the mania at this annual event and learn how you can help the population of the monarch butterfly.
