MDC is offering new online programs that allow people to attend virtually. Please check our class listings to see what classes are limited, in-person classes or virtual classes.

Registration required (ages 14+) As we approach spring, March is the time to get outdoors and prepare your garden beds for native plants! Join the Discovery Center's native landscape specialists as they share tips on how to plan your gardens and where to order native plants. This is an all outdoor program so dress for the weather. You will receive an e-mail from the instructor the day prior to the event if weather conditions indicate a need to cancel the program.

Have you ever sat on the shore or in a boat for hours upon hours with not a fish to shake a stick at? The right lure may be the answer. We are here to share some lure secrets to get that fish’s attention! Explore tried and tested methods, learn new skills and share some of your own!

Registration required (ages 12+) The ability to make rope or cordage from plant fibers is an ancient skill essential to surviving in the wild. We will learn to make simple cordage using the same plants Native Americans harvested from Missouri wild prairies to make bowstrings, fishing nets and clothing. This is an all outdoor program so dress for the weather. You will receive an e-mail from the instructor the day prior to the event if weather conditions indicate a need to cancel the program.

Everyone has broken fishing rod or two sitting around the house. Learn how get your old rods back in working order.

During this program participants will learn how to make simple but common repairs like fixing broken rod tips and replacing damaged eye's. However, they'll also learn to make some more complicated repairs like repairing a broken rod shaft and replacing a damaged or worn handle.

This program is appropriate for adults and children over the age of 12. Children must be accompanied by a registered adult.

Each participant must register for this program.
Email the instructor for assistance with registration.

Masks and social distancing will be required in the Nature Center during this program.

Date: Thursday, March 11, 2021 - 6:00pm to Saturday, March 13, 2021 - 11:00am

Location: Burr Oak Woods Conservation Nature Center

Learn everything you need to know about catching winter trout during this two days clinic. (Adults and families with children 9 years old and older).

Join us on Thursday evening, March 11th for a winter trout fishing lesson at Burr Oaks Woods Nature Center where we'll learn how to catch and clean winter trout.

Then bright and early Saturday morning, March 13th we'll meet again at Plover Lake, James A. Reeds Memorial Wildlife Area and spend a few hours trying our luck at catching some hungry trout.

Participants must attend the classroom trout fishing lesson inorder be included in the fishing opportunity.

Dress for the weather and bring your own snacks and drinks. Missouri Department of Conservation will provide equipment, tackle, bait and fishing coaches.

Fishing permits are NOT required to fish during this event as long as participants DO NOT plan to keep the trout that they catch. If participants would like to keep their trout they WILL need a Missouri trout permit.

Children must be accompanied by a registered adult.

In the event of bad weather we will go ahead with the indoor fishing lesson but the outdoor fishing opportunity may be postponed. Participants will be contacted if changes are necessary.

Responsible social distancing will be required during the classroom and fishing segments of this program. In addition, masks will be required during the classroom lesson in the Nature Center.

Each participant must register for this clinic separatly, email instructor for assistance with registration.

Spring is the time for many teens to pick up those outdoor chores like lawn work. This can lead to interesting wildlife discoveries as Missouri’s wildlife wakes up. Join us to learn about do’s and don’ts when you encounter these neighborhood critters.

Would you like to help increase the local bluebird population while having many hours of enjoyment watching our beautiful state bird? Register for this virtual session and you will build a bluebird house of your own.

Registration required (ages 16+) The peregrine falcon is the fastest wildlife species know in the world with flight speeds exceeding 200 mph. The species was highly impacted by the widespread use of pesticides like DDT found in their food chain from the 1940's to the 1960's and the peregrine falcon remains threatened or endangered in many Midwestern states today. Recovery programs like Missouri's are helping bring back the peregrine falcon to historic numbers that exceed natural history data. Gain insight into the "road to recovery" for Missouri's endangered peregrine falcon in this virtual program.

Every third Thursday at 12pm, we’ll tour the native landscape at MDC’s Anita B. Gorman Conservation Discovery Center. Guided by native landscape specialists Alix Daniel and Cydney Ross, this monthly series features a live look at native plants of interest throughout the year, This program is a partnership with Deep Roots.

Spring is here, and the toms are strutting. That can only mean one thing to some people; spring turkey season is here! For more than 50 years, Missourians have enjoyed pursuing these large elusive birds. Join us as we explore the basics of turkey hunting, including locations, equipment, techniques and more.
