Interested families who have never experienced shooting are invited to participate in an instructor led session covering shooting fundamentals, safety and proper techniques of an air rifle. All necessary equipment will be provided.

In this final lesson you will learn how to properly select a fishing lure based on desired fish species, weather and water conditions. In addition, participants will learn how to identify and understand fishing regulations. All fishing gear will be provided by the instructors. Please wear clothing and close-toed shoes suitable for outdoor and water activities. It is recommended that participants bring sunglasses, a water bottle, and sunscreen.

The Discover Nature Fishing Program is designed for children ages 7-15 years old, although parents/guardians are encouraged to learn and fish with their children. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Registration for Saturday morning classes closes the Thursday before at 4:00pm, and Tuesday classes the day before at 4:00pm.

No registration required (ages 10+ years). Join MDC naturalists and area birders as we discover the avian life that call Runge home. These short birding walks are for all experience-level birders. We will gather near the front doors of the nature center. Binoculars and field guides will be provided for those that need them.

Learning about nature from a young age is good for kids and for the environment; every month join Rockwoods naturalists for an outdoor adventure with your little one. The entire class is presented outside so please dress for the weather, wear sunscreen, and bring bug spray. Siblings are welcome but please note this class is designed for ages 3-6.

This program will introduce the fundamentals for safely and successfully shooting a compound bow, with hands on practice. All equipment will be provided. Class will meet at the Static Archery Range located at the Jay Henges Shooting Range and Outdoor Education Center. The class will be held outdoors so please dress for the weather. Ages 9 and up, participants 9-15 must be accompanied by an adult.

This series of four instructional lessons will assist children and families to gain skills and confidence to enjoy fishing. All classes are free and opened to youth ages 7-15, but the focus isn’t solely on kids. To be eligible to participate, youth must be accompanied by an adult or better yet bring entire family. All kids who complete all four classes will receive a 25$ gift certificate from Bass Pro Shops.
Bait, tackle and pole will be provided for the class, all we need is YOU!

The topics of the lessons include:
Lesson 1: Equipment, casting, proper fish handling
Lesson 2: How to tie a knot and bait a hook

Never paddled a canoe before but always wanted to try? Bring your family and stop by to learn the basic skills necessary to keep afloat while having fun. We will be using our kids’ fishing lake to practice our strokes in a safe environment. This event is come and go as you like. Adult supervision is required for ages 7-17.

While the mere thought of a snake may make parents shudder, kids love them. Come to this month’s meeting to learn all the fun facts about Missouri’s most misunderstood reptile. Please no younger siblings and only one adult per group of kids. Ages 7-12.

As the days get longer and the sun warms the air, people come out to enjoy the spring season. But, people are not the only things that “come to life” when spring arrives. Spring plants unfold their leaves and work to bear fruit. The staff at Twin Pines is taking advantage of that bounty with a class on how to prepare foods, such as, wild strawberries and sassafras for your table. Other wild plants will also be used depending upon availability. This program is for ages 16 and up. Under 18 must have a parent or guardian present.
