Have you thought about hunting, but just don’t know where to start? Deer hunting is a challenging, yet exciting tradition here in Missouri. Come out to Burr Oak Woods and learn the basics of pursuing white-tailed deer. We will cover everything from scouting locations to hunting methods, tracking your deer and more. Dress to be outside. There will be a break for lunch.

National Hunting and Fishing Day (NHF)- Each year on the forth Saturday in September we celebrate NHF day by providing one free hour of shooting on the rifle/pistol range, shotgun patterning range, or the archery range and for shotgun shooters we allow one free round of trap or skeet. Bring your own firearms and ammunition to participate and regular check in, hours, and fees apply for other hours/rounds needed.

A rare habitat can be found in Southeast Missouri. A place where Dusty hognose snakes burrow and Prickly pear cactus grows. Trek the sandy soils of Sand Prairie Conservation area in search of unique plants and animals that depend on this site for survival.
Participants must dress appropriately for the weather and must wear sturdy shoes. Bring water and any comfort items (insect repellant, hat, binoculars, sunscreen, etc.) Program will be canceled if severe weather is in the area. You will be contacted if program is canceled.

This program includes handgun fundamentals, operation, safety, maintenance, and safe storage. We start with classroom instruction then move to the range for a live-fire session. Firearms, ammunition, and safety equipment are provided. You may bring your own handgun and ammunition to the live-fire session.

Prescribed fire is a low cost way for landowners to manage grasslands, CRP and old fields for forage production and/or improve wildlife habitat. This workshop will include classroom discussions on methods, equipment, safety, and why and when you would use fire as a management tool. Emphasis will include how to conduct a safe and effective burn to control sprouts, encourage beneficial plants and create better quality quail habitat. Participation will qualify landowners to have a prescribed burn plan prepared for their fields and use available loan equipment.

Join Dr. Allen Gathman as he leads a morning hike, looking and listening for birds. Whether you are new to birding or experienced, this will be enjoyable hike. You will need to bring your own binoculars and water bottle. Good hiking boots are recommended. After registration, directions to the location will be emailed to you. The hike will be near Patton. If you want to bring your lunch and enjoy it there, you are welcome.

Come on out to the Cape Nature Center Kid’s Pond and get the chance to learn the basics of catfishing. Participants will learn all about catfish, which includes their basic biology, their habitat, and what kind of bait to use when fishing for them.
All equipment will be provided for the participants to use.

Location: Seventy-Six Conservation Area

The river bluffs will be awash with fall color for this hike. Bring a refillable water bottle and lunch. Wear good hiking shoes/boots and bring bug spray. This is a more difficult hike with some hills to climb. If the weather prohibits hiking, it will be rescheduled for October 12. Meet at the trailhead at 10 AM.

Jakes stands for Junior Acquiring Knowledge, Ethics and Sportsmanship. This event is designed for children ages 6 to 12 and features a variety of activities related to the great outdoors. National Wild Turkey Federation members and the Twin Pines staff will present sessions that introduce and improve skills related to archery, air rifle, hunting, fishing, plants, wildlife and safety. Lunch will be served. Each participant will be entered in the event’s prize drawing and will receive a goodie bag and Jakes membership. On the trail performance of:
Superheroes and the Curse of the Alien Invaders
Walk-in (all ages)
If you listen carefully, you may hear the incredible story of the war between the Superheroes and the Alien Invaders! Meet the Incredible Hulk, Batman, Aqua Girl, Spiderman, Captain Marvel and even Superman along the trail as they battle against the Alien Invaders of Burr Oak Woods! Activities, crafts, prizes and refreshments included! Experts will also be available to discuss some of these troublesome exotic species. There will be something for everyone! Registration is not necessary, but you may pick up tickets for your selected time at the nature center prior to OR on the day of the performance. Performances begin approximately every 15 minutes. Each will last 45 minutes. Tickets are limited.

Ever wonder what it takes to keep all the nature center reptiles, amphibians, and fish happy? Thanks to some amazing animal care volunteers, they are fed a delicious smorgasbord of crickets, worms, minnows, and more! Drop by to visit with the volunteers and staff as they feed the hungry critters. Youth and adult groups welcome.
