Red maples may start blooming on warm days this month. Squirrels nip off the flowers and lick the sweet sap that oozes from the twigs.

The height of red fox breeding season is January and February. Females give a shrill squall, and males answer with two or three short barks.

What a welcome sight! This small woodland wildflower is a sign that we’ve turned the corner on winter. It’s in the carrot-parsley family.

Look for our national symbol near lakes, rivers, and marshes. With the trees still bare, you can easily see their gigantic nests from a distance.
