Clock a Thunderstorm

Publish Date

May 23, 2011

There’s a thunderstorm rumbling in the distance. Want to know how far away it is? When you see lightning flash, count the seconds until you hear thunder. If you don’t have a watch, just say “one Show-Me State, two Show-Me State, three Show-Me State ...”

For every five seconds you count, the storm is one mile away. Be careful, though. Lightning can cook you crispy. Stay inside or on a porch while you’re listening for thunder.
