JACKSON, Mo. -- The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) presents a Youth Dove Hunt for ages 11 to 15 on opening day of dove season, Sept. 1, at Maintz Wildlife Preserve in Cape Girardeau County.

“This is a safe and fun opportunity for our area youth to discover nature through dove hunting,” said MDC Wildlife Management Biologist Matt Bowyer.

The event will start on the evening of Aug. 31 with a workshop at the Apple Creek Conservation Area Shooting Range, which is 16 miles north of Jackson. Bowyer said the Friday night workshop is a time for the youth to practice their shooting and safety techniques before they hunt on Saturday.

Hunting hours for the youth portion of the hunt are sunrise until noon, Sept. 1, at Maintz Wildlife Preserve. A hunter-education-certified sponsor must accompany each child at both portions of the clinic. Sponsors will not be allowed to carry a firearm at the event. Participants will be asked to secure their attendance with a $25 deposit that will be refunded when they attend the event. Bowyer said space is limited to the first 20 hunter-education-certified students who register.

Maintz Wildlife Preserve consists of 804 acres and is located northwest of Jackson on County Road 472 off of Route B.
